Waspzilla

After a series of strange incidents, a sheriff in a small-town community learns that the responsible party is a giant wasp mutated from a chemical spill turning it into a monstrous killing machine and forcing her to bring in an additional series of tactics to stop the bloodsoaked rampage.

This was a fairly fun and cheesy creature feature. The main selling point here involves everything about the creature going on a rampage as it does with the simple storyline getting it free from the chemical spill that turns it large as well and then going around into a solid series of encounters from there is a great touch. As there's a continuous assortment of encounters and confrontations with the locals where the clumsily-inserted wasp is shown swarming around the background before turning to kill them, this is handled with the type of randomized indie-style encounters where the individuals go about their lives only to find the creature has arrived and kills them in graphic means featuring the immensely goofy effects to pull it off. Given the kind of immensely cheesy and silly material present with how the scenes come together or the general approach of the production that matches the same indie tone as the rest of the film, this gets quite silly and cheesy at times. For those that appreciate this style and approach to films, it gets a lot to like while that setup does come with the risk of turning off those who don't enjoy it. The whole approach of this one appearing as a random assortment of skits coming together with random people who don't interact with others, are subject to a never-ending series of silly CGI-filled encounters with the creature that also barely interacts with others, or just come off as so patently ridiculous that it all looks cheap does make this one feel slightly problematic at points. With this managing to go for an approach that highlights its origins with these filmmaking tactics or the series of obvious interjections to highlight the crowdfunding setup of the whole thing that helps to showcase these aspects as well, this one never attempts to highlight what type of film it is and might be the kind of feature that will turn off viewers.

Okay so there's a lot of movies that are so bad they're good. This one is so bad it's unwatchable... Yet you continue to watch because you're in disbelief. It qualifies for a best hate watch of the last decade.

Literally from the opening minute you know this is going to be a train wreck. The acting is below D level... The writing has less than zero continuity. Then they figure they'll throw some random graphic nudity in there and you'll be okay... I mean who doesn't like boobs right? Well Waspzilla even manages to make nudity feel weird and out of place.

Literally everything that happens in this movie is handled with less than 0 effort. I could randomly call 10 people in my contacts on right now and we could make a more coherent movie in 24 hours. People will say... That's the point it's a B movie... No even with a B movie there's a mild attempt at acting, plot development etc... this movie sets B movies back 50 years.

And then there's the wasp 😂... I'd call it bad CGI but that would be doing bad CGI a disservice. It's on the level of well... Microsoft clip art is the only thing that really comes to mind and I think that's over selling it. It makes Birdemic look like Industrial Lights and Magic.

I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the nudity again... It really make you feel like a dirty old man for liking it. It takes a terrible movie to turn a little nudity into such a weird experience but Waspzilla manages it in spades. It's just so random like they're saying... This movie is so bad and we know it so here's some boobs to randomly look at for no reason. It doesn't lead to any bad sex scenes or feel remotely sexual... They're just kind of out there for no reason.

And then you pause it to think about how bad what you've just witnessed is after 30 minutes... And then there's an hour left. Yes this movie is 90 minutes or so... If you make it through the entire runtime you've likely been tortured in some way before. At the end of the day more than anything else it's not the bad CGI, or the weird nudity, it's the incoherence of everything that kills this movie the most. The fact that they randomly jump from scene to scene with nothing that ties anything together. The fact that clearly everything was done in one take and nobody edited anything. They don't even attempt to make anything make sense. The entire movie is as if the director met with the actors 5 minutes before he started shooting, told them in 30 seconds what their scene was and said wing it we only got one take here. I've watched some bad movies but this might literally be the bottom of the barrel. If IMDb allowed zeros that's what this movie would get... And it earned it.

Waspzilla features a giant wasp on a killing spree. When the local sheriff gets a phone call from one of the local citizens about a giant killer wasp, he sends his best deputy (Morrigan Thompson) and a rookie (Angel Nichole Bradford) to check into it.

Both of the sheriff deputies discover that there really is a giant killer wasp and they set out to stop it.

Waspzilla is a fun, campy horror film. The CGI wasp is pretty cool and the special effects fit the budget of the film. The films mixture of humor and horror keeps your attention for the whole 80 minutes. Director James B. Thomasson (Backwoods Bubba), along with a slew of current indie horror stars such as Mel Hefflin, Clint Beaver, Angel Nichole Bradford, and Morrigan Thompson have created a very fun film. Make sure you keep watching until after the end credits for more Waspzilla fun!

If anyone is a fan of James Nguyen's infamous cult classic Birdemic: shock and terror (2010) then you'll love this sorry attempt of a movie. You can tell that it wasn't made with much effort. Plus there was something half baked about it all. Apparently there's rumours that there will be a sequel so that'll be a shame. I wouldn't recommend this film as it doesn't go anywhere... unless you like topless girls as they randomly throw that in there. Bad cgi also... not so sure if that was the point to be cheesy but it doesn't work for multiple reasons. Avoid this if you can. Just bad. Can't believe it was crowdfunded and people donated 😣
