Away is a bold and personal film that deconstructs the image of Mario Casas as we know him. Whether you&#39;ve followed his career closely or only in passing, this performance strips him bare-physically and emotionally-and places him in a space of vulnerability rarely offered to leading men. Gerard Oms presents not just a narrative, but a dramatized personal experience that feels honest, imperfect, and deeply felt. Watching this during the FICG, followed by a generous and humble Q&amp;A with the director, added to the emotional resonance. One scene stands out powerfully: the nightclub sequence-a moment of masculine release, reminiscent of Claire Denis&#39; Beau Travail, yet charged with its own rhythm, pain, and longing. The year 2008 flickers on screen like a memory: distant, nostalgic, and unfinished. From a thematic lens, Away offers a compelling meditation on masculinity, identity, and communication, especially within marginalized contexts such as the LGBTIQ+ community and those affected by migration. Despite the passage of 17 years, the issues it raises still feel urgent and unresolved. The main flaw lies in its editing, which at times borders on amateurish and disrupts the flow of an otherwise powerful film. Still, the technical aspects-cinematography, sound, atmosphere-hold their own and contribute to a raw experience.
