Did the teacher have something to do with it? What exactly did she say in class? And why was one child left behind? These questions-and many more-are slowly explored from different perspectives: parents, teachers, investigators, and the surviving child. Bit by bit, the story unfolds like a tense and intriguing puzzle.
What Weapons does especially well is build suspense. The atmosphere is so intense, you barely dare to cough or eat popcorn in the theater. And yet, the film also manages to surprise with unexpectedly funny or quirky moments-ones that make you laugh, even though you least expect it, given the serious subject matter. That contrast adds a unique flavor to the story.
But the ending may divide opinions. Where most thrillers ramp up to a dramatic finale, Weapons takes a different route. Once the mystery begins to take shape and you start to understand what's going on, the tension fades. It starts to feel almost like a quiet family drama-but make no mistake, it's not one.
Still, I thought it was a strong film. Beautifully shot, well acted, and full of moments that linger in your mind. I was torn between a 7 and an 8, but since it stuck with me more than most films this year, I'm giving Weapons a solid 8 out of 10.
If i had any issues, it would be that the film feels just a bit too long, and there's one character whose arc didn't feel as compelling as the others, though i wouldn't say i dislike or hate the characters.
The rest of Weapons is as intense and weird as you'd expect, yet surprisingly funny, somehow the humor lands without undercutting the disturbing tension that runs throughout, the performances are great across the board, and Zach Cregger direction proves once again that he knows how to deliver smart, stylish horror without relying on cheap jump scares.
Overall, i do think Barbarian is a better movie but Weapons is still a good second feature from Cregger, a strong follow-up that shows Cregger is a director worth watching, i had a good time with it.
Director Zach Cregger continues to prove he's not afraid to break the mold, following up Barbarian (2022) with another unpredictable, non-traditional narrative. The story starts off familiar, but quickly evolves into something far more layered and unsettling.
I especially appreciated the decision to split the narrative across multiple characters - it added depth and gave the audience a clearer view of the bigger picture.
My only real critique is the ending - it was a bit abstract and left me slightly unsatisfied. Still, it fits the film's overall tone and ambition.
Highly recommended for fans of horror that challenges the norm.

Captain Ed: Mr. Graff, I can understand your passion and I don't mind having these conversations with you because god forbid if it was my child, I'd be demanding answers too. Those kids walked out of those homes, no one pulled them out. No one forced them. What do you see that I don't?
