Super Icyclone

When I stumbled upon the 2024 natural disaster movie "Super Icyclone" here in 2025, of course I opted to watch it, since it was a natural disaster movie that I had neither heard off nor watched. Sure, I wasn't really harboring the biggest of expectations, given the movie's title, and the fact that the majority of natural disaster movies tends to be questionable affairs.

Writers Andrew Cymek, Jake Helgren and Brigitte Kingsley put together a fair enough script, taking into consideration the premise of the movie. Yeah, it was a generic disaster movie, no doubt about it, but it made for adequate enough entertainment actually.

I was not familiar with the cast ensemble in the movie, and that was actually something that stoke in favor of the movie. Yeah, I do enjoy watching new and unfamiliar talents on the screen. And I will say that the acting performances in "Super Icyclone" were fair.

Visually, then I will say that the effects in "Super Icyclone" were definitely better than I had expected them to be. Just funny why the icicle projectiles were very singular in targeting out specific individuals, where you would assume that there would be a battering assault of countless icicles raining down from the skies. But isn't that the problem with these types of natural disaster movies in general, with mother nature singling out a sole family and goes ballistic on the members of that one family for some reason.

Watchable, sure, but it is not a movie that warrants more than just a single viewing.

My rating of director Andrew Cymek's 2024 movie "Super Icyclone" lands on a four out of ten stars.

Yep, another formula disaster movie. They do not even try to mask it with any plausibility. According to the climatologist, Jill, played by Brigitte Kingsley this just cannot happen. Hope your windows are closed and cats are inside.

We are lucky that they use all the standard cliches with straight faces. You may miss sharks but the tornados can spit out just as lethal ice spikes. Even more luck is that we do not have to wait half way through the movie to see icy action.

They follow the formula perfectly so we can guess what happens accurately. The fun is in seeing that they do it correctly not logically. We get lots of stay in the car scenes. (I know you are not supposed to stay in the car in a tornado movie.) One of the highlights of the movie is cell phones that no longer get service and other cell phones that stop working when the lights go out.

I cannot believe they gave up eating spaghetti for a romp in a hot tub! Which reminds me one day you need to watch "Eating Raoul" (1982).

At least this movie should put a little spike in your life. Some people may think this movie sucks. But that is what it is supposed to do.

While I wouldn't say this is a bad movie, there's a lot of flaws in this one. The movie contains a lot of cliches that you see in any disaster movies like the main character discovered something, her boss refused to listen, her teenager daughter going out with her friends, and people not listening until it happen. It's easily predictable with each of these and some of it feels rush like the boss and townsfolks refused to listen. Also, there a couple of plot point that feels important, but end up not using it like that one small romance with the daughter character and one of her friends. The movie have the tornado shooting ice out of itself which is ridiculous and shows how dangerous it is. And the CGI of the tornado doesn't look bad at all. But there are some questionable moments like how the tornado is so close that none of the cars ever gets stuck into it. And I already guess on how the movie is going to ended.

Super Icyclone has some enjoyable to be found, but it full with a bunch of cliches that you see in other disaster movies out there.
