Contra's big comeback...

I have enjoyed the Contra games since the year of 1991 when a guy older than my older sister and I introduced us to Contra for the Nintendo Entertainment System - and its sequel Super C (which was originally Super Contra in the arcade).

Up until I saw the trailer of the game, I was playing the classic Contra games on the Contra Anniversary Collection by means of my Nintendo Switch - and playing the old Contra game on the NES was no exception (let alone doing that "Konami Code" to get thirty lives instead of three). When I saw the trailer for this Contra game, I knew some good stuff was about to go down.

When I finally got the game, I was smiling - since I had played the demo, the game had a few alternate soundtracks - the Retro Mix (where the BGM is the music from Contra and Super C for the NES) and the Vania Mix (as the name implies, it's various songs from classic Castlevania games of the NES era) to name a few.

The game gives you two modes to start out with either Story Mode or Arcade Mode. Sure, the game is a reimagining of the old Contra on NES, and playing arcade mode is the closest thing to a remastered version of Contra, if anything.

Probably the best thing about this Contra are the perks. Before you fire up the game (after picking out which character you want to be - whether you want to be Bill or Lance or any other characters who you've unlocked via story mode), you're given the option to select whichever perks you want. I'm always using the "Weapon Retention" perk which keeps whichever weapons I have in the event of my death. Another good thing is that the game gives you the option to have a health bar or - if you're wanting to stay faithful to some old school Contra, the "one hit kill" where, when you take damage from an enemy, you lose a life - there's perks to extend your HP bar as well.

This is a must-have for people who grew up with Konami's Contra games - and I'm no exception.

Commander Doyle: Let's review the mission details. As you know, a terrorist group called Red Falcon has been carrying out limited strikes around the globe. We've confirmed reports they've set up shop on the main island of Galuga, following the meteor event earlier this year. The Federation immediately dispatched the GX Army, as they were in the vicinity for military exercises. They seemed to be making headway until three days ago, when we lost contact.
Bill Rizer: You're kidding. Gen-ten is the strongest unit in the Federation Army. No way some fringe upstarts took them out.
Commander Doyle: While it's still unconfirmed, we should assume the worst. Apparently the Red Falcon are more powerful than we realized. Speaking of which... Our science division has some troubling intel of their own. Dr. Drake?
Dr. George Drake: The Federation's interstellar satellite network detected a gravity anomaly - something on Earth emitting gravity waves strong enough to circle the planet. Their source coordinates aligned squarely on the Galuga Archipelago.
Lucia Drake: This gives us reason to suspect the Red Falcon are developing gravity weapons.
Lance Bean: Gravity weapons... The Federation banned them decades ago.
Daniel Henriksen: That's right, Lance. We can't risk destructive power of that magnitude falling into the wrong hands. My weapons division at Henriksen Industries confirms those readings are consistent with the components of a gravity bomb. ... Even just storing that thing improperly could cause tectonic shifts, climate disturbances, or worst case, a potential black hole.
Commander Doyle: Bill, Lance, given the situation I think it's clear why the Federation enlisted our EMC Contra unit. Your primary objective is to engage Red Falcon ground forces, confirm the source of those gravity waves, and disarm it. If at all possible, locate the GX Army and report back with their current status. There's a Red Falcon stronghold not far from your drop. Infiltrate the base and apprehend their Lieutenant. His field intel will help determine our next move.
Lance Bean: A remote hideout, missing super soldiers, and a doomsday weapon...
Bill Rizer: Helluva Friday.
Lance Bean: [the helicopter soon arrives at the island] Time to introduce ourselves.
