The creators, Tim Robinson and Zach Kanin, deliberately adopted a very unstructured, improvisational approach when developing the show. They've said that "none of this is thought out. It's not planned. It's not on purpose".
During production, the creators intentionally withheld the series finale from critics. For early reviewers, HBO and the producers provided the first seven episodes in advance but asked them not to report key details from the finale.
