Creepy and Tense

With an unsettling and chilling atmosphere, The Summer Hikaru Died delivers a gripping tale of horror, friendship, grief and sins based in a small town.

The plot follows Hikaru who got lost in the mountains and back after 6 months. His return brings abnormal anomalies into the town. Hikaru is gone and an entity possesses his body and his friend Yoshiki who doesn't want to believe that his friend is gone.

The horror element on this is amazing and how they create tension is well thought out and executed effectively, with everything connected as we go further. The animation is visually striking and characters are well-drawn. And the mix with hyper realistic elements within some episodes was such a brilliant touch on their end.

Overall, The Summer Hikaru Died is a creepy horror anime with elements of absurdity, emotions as well as mystery that works well to give a tense atmosphere. Waiting for the next season to see more.

My Rating : 3.5/5.

Unfortunately, Japanese horror still doesn't captivate me.

Let's talk about "Hikaru ga Shinda Natsu" or "The Summer Hikaru Died," which just wrapped its first season today.

There's a problem I have with Japanese horror, and that is that it doesn't scare me or disturb me or generate the same feelings it probably does in the East.

Is that a bad thing? Not at all, but I feel like I'm not the audience the series is aimed at.

On the one hand, it's a supernatural mystery story, and at times it has horror undertones, which creates a mix we don't usually see.

With a slightly quirky opening and an ending that I like even more for its melancholy.

Here in Latin America, we had a controversy over the translation, as this is clearly a BL, but it seems Netflix didn't like the idea of a romantic relationship between its two main characters. Who knows.

I really liked Hikaru and Yoshiki's dynamic; it's truly the strongest point of the series. The eternal dispute over who the monster is: Hikaru, a supernatural entity that possessed the body after its death, or Yoshiki, who feels increasingly close and doesn't want it to return.

However, I think the narrative is slow, and this doesn't benefit the series and its development; it's as if the plot isn't engaging at times. We have interesting characters like Asako, Rie Kurebasashi, and Tanaka himself, who are poorly developed and feel more like props for much of the season.

These 12 chapters have plenty of ups and downs, but it ends on a cliffhanger that's somewhat anticlimactic, in my opinion.

I know the manga is very popular in Japan and that we'll have more seasons ahead. However, as I said before, the series hasn't completely won me over yet.

We'll see how things turn out in the following seasons, but in a busy season like this one, it didn't even make the top 5 of the best series I've seen.

Love this

The Summer Hikaru Died is a haunting and beautifully crafted manga that blends psychological horror with deep emotional themes. The story revolves around Yoshiki and his childhood friend Hikaru, who returns after a mysterious disappearance-but something is very wrong. The manga masterfully explores grief, identity, and love, with an unsettling atmosphere and striking, delicate art. It keeps readers on edge through its slow-burn pacing and eerie tension. The characters feel raw and genuine, making the supernatural elements even more impactful. A must-read for those who enjoy thoughtful, unsettling stories.

Beautiful

Just beautiful. Until now (first two episodes), the mystery and the horror aspects are both great. Also the relationship between "Hikaru" and yoshiki is very interesting. I wonder where the story, their relationship and the horror and mystery aspects go. Other than that, the visuals are STUNNING, animation wise and in terms of style. It reminds me of high budget anime movies like your name by makoto shinkai a little bit. But what I enjoy about the visuals are two things. 1: the characters and 2: the atmosphere. All characters look unique and different without looking unrealistic like in most animes with weird hair colors and weird proportions. And the summer atmosphere is just spot an as well. Perfect.

A Hauntingly Beautiful Mystery with Deep Emotions

The Summer Hikaru Died is one of the most captivating anime debuts I've seen in years. From the first episode, it grips you with its eerie atmosphere, emotional weight, and beautiful direction. The story blends supernatural horror with slice of ife moments and an intense, slow-burning relationship between the two main characters, Yoshiki and "Hikaru."

The animation is stunning not flashy, but subtle and haunting. The voice acting is top-notch, and the sound design adds to the chilling yet tender tone of the show. What really stands out, though, is the emotional core. The tension between grief, fear, and longing is portrayed so naturally. You feel Yoshiki's confusion and heartbreak.

This anime doesn't shy away from its queer themes either. The bond between Yoshiki and the "thing" that took Hikaru's form is complex and layered, making it feel more human than most traditional romances. It's refreshing and raw.

Love it!

I really enjoyed the horror aspect; it builds tension through atmosphere rather than relying on predictable jump scares. The emotional bond between the main characters also adds a heartfelt layer that balances out the creepy tone in a meaningful way. It's refreshing to see a horror story with actual depth and character development. I'm definitely looking forward to what the upcoming episodes bring, hopefully even more intensity, deeper storytelling, and maybe some unexpected twists along the way.

Hats off to the voice cast, the writing and editing team behind the anime, and of course, to Mok-sensei for their outstanding work!

Modern masterpiece of horror and grief

The Summer Hikaru Died lingers long after you put it down. What begins as a quiet, almost nostalgic slice-of-life about two boys in a rural town slowly unravels into a deeply unsettling, emotionally charged horror story that cuts straight to the heart.

The horror here isn't just supernatural - it's existential. The dread builds not from jump scares, but from the unbearable question: what if someone you loved came back... but wasn't them anymore? Yoshiki's inner conflict, his denial, his grief, and his quiet desperation are portrayed with haunting subtlety.

The art is beautiful and atmospheric, often sparse but loaded with feeling. Every shadow feels intentional. Every panel carries weight. And the pacing is masterful - slow, deliberate, with a constant sense of something not quite right.

This isn't just a horror manga. It's a meditation on identity, attachment, and the quiet horrors of change. It's intimate. It's terrifying. It's tender. A must-read for anyone who wants more than just gore and monsters - this is horror with a soul.

Haunting, Beautiful, and Unforgettable - A Masterpiece of Atmosphere and Emotion

The Summer Hikaru Died is the kind of story that creeps up on you - not just with its supernatural tension, but with a deeply human core that lingers long after the final page or scene. It's a quiet, eerie masterpiece that blends horror, grief, and love with incredible emotional precision.

Set in a small rural town wrapped in mist and isolation, the story follows Yoshiki, a teenage boy dealing with a terrifying realization: the friend he once knew, Hikaru, might no longer be human. What unfolds isn't your typical horror tale, but something far more nuanced - a melancholic coming-of-age wrapped in cosmic dread.

The writing (or adaptation, if you're reviewing the show) treats its characters with rare sensitivity. There's no rush to explain the mystery or force cheap scares. Instead, it focuses on building atmosphere, tension, and the fragile, complicated bond between two boys navigating love, fear, and loss. The ambiguity of their relationship - romantic? Platonic? Something more cosmic? - is part of the beauty. It invites interpretation without ever feeling coy or incomplete.

Fans of Mushishi, Shiki, or A Silent Voice will feel at home here, but Hikaru stands on its own as a rare piece of horror that dares to be gentle, even as it horrifies.

This is a story about grief, love, and the unknown. About how we cope when someone we love changes into something we can't quite understand - or when we change ourselves. It's not just one of the best horror titles of the year, it's one of the most emotionally resonant stories I've encountered in a long time. Absolutely essential.

THE Gay Horror Anime

Technically speaking, 3 episodes isn't enough to proclaim this is a masterpiece, but as a big fan of body horror mixed with queer subtext (and straight up text, I mean-) this is really everything I've ever wished for in a beautifully animated package. Sound design? Amazing. Voice acting? Stellar. You can't ask for much more perfection, really - the complexity is well captured even if the content is undoubtedly less lengthy than the manga. I wonder what emotions they'll be able to pull out of me in the next episodes but so far, this is beautiful and should already be scheduled for a second season.

l love it

I haven't watched any anime in a long time, but I don't regret watching Hikaru. It also made me read the manga and I finished it in 2 days.

The anime captures the atmosphere of the manga well, although I'm surprised that Tanaka appeared so early. But we'll see how it goes.

I would also like to point out the good style and good music. That ending is SUPER.

This is also one of those anime where I like all the characters. It's interesting to watch everyone!

I've seen a lot of comments that they are confused by the fact that the main character is gay. On the contrary, I'm glad that queer characters can exist outside of BL.

ANTI VILLAGE PROPAGANDA! 😒

In a country like japan where villages are getting empty and everyone is going to cities to collect cash and make capitalists rich and destroy there traditions which was followed for thousands of years, series like this are one of the reasons for it.

Villagers are shown dumb, selfish, homophobic, patriarchal, superstitious, demon worshiping and human sacrificing people, seriously 😒 fells like manga author is some sort of missionary or something, he even added that in ancient time people who didn't like all of above mentioned stuff converted to Christianity.

Taking about technical stuff, brilliant animation and music, the only reason i could complete this series, screenplay falls flat after first 2 episodes there nothing but timepass till episode 7 or 8, series is only focused on two characters there is not much information about other characters.

Overall if you are expecting horror it last only in first 2 episodes and there are bits and pieces of it in remaining episodes, if you like beautiful animation and music give it try, i personally don't recommend it.

I appreciate this show so much

Even though theres gonna be censorship due to netflix's weird stuff on queer stuff in their shows especially in anime's (which is weird if ur gonna make a show from a manga whwn that's a big part of it) it's still an awesome show that matches the manga and gives such great imagery. The fandom is just so cool and the edits on tiktok and instagram are just so good i love it- Tshd is my biggest hyperfixation right now im glad this is animated so well 😻😻

One of the best anime I've ever seen

Literally everything about this show captivates me (the animation, the characters, the story...) and just the first 10 minutes of ep 1 almost instantly motivated me to read the manga. Even knowing what's going to happen next, watching this show is extremely exciting- I'd even call it addicting as I'm on my 4th rewatch lmao- as the pairing of slice of life and horror works incredibly well here. I've been recommending this to everyone I know!

I'm hooked

This anime-The Summer Hikaru died is by far the best I've ever seen. I am invested in the characters and the storyline. It's full of angst, heartbreak, mystery, longing and horror.

I love the message it is conveying, I can relate with it on several levels which makes it that much better. I'm sure so many people are able to relate to one or both of the characters in some form or fashion.

There are so many layers to it and it leaves so much room for thought, there's so much meat to each episode to dissect.

By episode three I was so obsessed that I had to run and out purchase Mangas 1-3 of the Summer Hikaru died. I highly recommend!!

The summer hikaru died

It is a hauntingly beautiful blend of horror and emotional depth. The story explores grief, identity, and love in a small-town setting where something isn't quite right. The eerie atmosphere and striking art style pull you in, while the slow-burn relationship between Yoshiki and the entity wearing Hikaru's face is both chilling and tragic. It's a unique manga that balances supernatural dread with heartbreaking intimacy. The pacing is perfect-quiet but tense-and each chapter leaves you unsettled yet emotionally invested. The way it portrays human emotion, memory, and denial is raw and unforgettable. With every panel, it asks: what does it mean to love someone who is no longer the same? A must-read for fans of psychological horror and character-driven storytelling.

Disgusting

I went into The Summer Hikaru Died hoping for an emotional and haunting story, but what I got was a frustrating mess. The premise had potential, but the execution was painfully slow, confusing, and hollow. The characters never felt real, and their relationships lacked depth. Instead of drawing me in, the story kept pushing me away with vague symbolism and endless ambiguity that never paid off.

It tries very hard to look deep and artistic, but ends up shallow and pretentious. By the end, I felt nothing but disappointment. Easily one of the most overrated works I've come across.

actually amazing

Visually stunning art, eerie atmosphere, and purely amazing storytelling. Truly amazing manga and great start to the anime. Emotions are realistic and hatred displayed against it is usually pure homophobia and bigotry. Truly disappointing that so many aren't giving this a try because of their value, when this concept is that of an interesting one.

Beautifully Eerie

Coming from someone who read the manga, the anime is certainly doing it justice. It truly captures the unsettling, eerie feeling that the manga has. I appreciate that the adaptation isn't shying away from the deeper meanings that lie within. The sound design and visuals are amazing. There are slight differences in the story setup and pacing but that's why it's called an adaptation. Although, I'd say that the anime stays very true to the source material. Give it a watch, and keep an open mind.
