Christmas films used to be fun.

Kate and Everett decide to "consciously uncouple," but still insist on sharing one last family Christmas. Kate's taking it in her stride - until she discovers Everett has upgraded to Tess, a dazzling English rose who glides in like she's never known hardship or a badly lit kitchen.

If, like me, you fall victim to the infamous Netflix algorithm and are forced to endure this festive misery, consider this your warning. Don't let its chart position fool you - trust me, anyone who hit play before several eggnogs clearly wasn't thinking straight.

Prepare to be clobbered by a relentless barrage of sugar-fuelled torment. Kate is frostier than the rooftops, a loathsome character you're somehow meant to sympathise with. By comparison, Tess seems really rather lovely. It's not Alicia Silverstone's finest hour, sadly - Kate feels more like someone who should be haunting a Halloween sequel than decking the halls.

And then there's Nigel. Oh Nigel... the English Harry Potter devotee. He's excruciating. Truly appalling. He makes those caricature Brits from Murder, She Wrote look positively well-rounded.

Naturally, the Hallmark truck backs up and unloads its decorations budget (roughly equivalent to the GDP of a small nation). Brace yourself for endless baking scenes - the sort that only happen in fantasy Christmas kitchens where not a spoon, crumb, or mildly rebellious spatula is ever out of place.

The jokes land with a thud, and by the end you find yourself wishing they'd simply not bothered. The credits are the only warmth you'll feel during the entire experience.

We're meant to feel for Kate, the wronged wife, but frankly I'm surprised Everett didn't flee to Poland twenty years ago.

It's all rather loathsome.

2.5/10.

Really terrible

I really wanted to like this movie. I like the cast and the premise was good but wow did this fall flat. Somehow, other than Jamila and the Harry Potter boyfriend, everyone was two-dimensional and the acting was terrible. There wasn't nearly enough Melissa Joan-Hart to try and salvage it. Alicia's character was a horrible spoilt brat and the husband was a d****bag. It's really difficult to be invested in a movie when you hate all the characters because they're completely unlikeable and then to top it all off with terrible acting and the producers throwing in all the clichès but also failing at that, makes this a very sad movie.

A really bad holiday movie.

What a waste of money, Netflix must have money to burn. Guess they don't have reps who actually read scripts anymore, this one must have been green lit based on 'good vibs'. Netflix normally funds better quality films, like last years Christmas movie "Our Little Secret". That film was well written and had a great cast and it was very funny.

Whoever wrote this script doesn't understand humor or how to write it. And the actors don't make it funny. Holiday films are competitive so I can watch better ones or I can just rewatch "Our Little Secret", their hit from last year.

Unwatchable

I think this is one of the worst Christmas movies I've ever seen.

I turned it off.

Alicia is utterly unlikable, as is the rest, and it seems everyone forgot how to act...

Netflix should invest a bit more budget in Christmas movies or stop making crap like this cause it was really unwatchable......

Netflix needs to have a category called "Did It For The Money"

Look, I knew what I was getting into with a Hallmark/Lifetime-type Christmas movie, and I'm OK with that, generally. However, at least in those movies, the actors are TRYING. In 'a merry little Ex-MAS', nearly every performance (except perhaps two) were clearly phoned in. And don't even get me started on the writing. There was absolutely no reason to prolong the story beyond the one hour mark. Well, on the bright side, watching this movie puts me one step closer to canceling my Netflix subscription. I'll sign back up when Bridgerton S4 drops!

So dumb it's good

I like all the stupid plus the 90s actors. All the cringe and discomfort your looking for in a Christmas film. Adorably embraces all of the Christmas movie clichés. If you are looking for deep and profound, turn around and walk away briskly. If you want some cheesiness with a twist, enjoy the goofiness.

A top entry in the burgeoning straight-to-NetfliXmas genre

Not sure what all the negativity is about! For this genre it doesn't really get any better. It is genuinely funny, with the writing far sharper than it needs to be, the actors really commit to the goofiness and the bits, and it's a nice round (and obviously predictable) narrative.

If you're looking for high-quality cut above Christmas fare, stream it...a guaranteed good time.

Fun-filled, goofy and heartwarming

The film focuses on a married couple who are in the process of "uncoupling", trying to navigate a season of Christmas traditions with their young-adult kids. Complications logistical and emotional abound, including their kid's futures, fledgling new relationships, and the whole town knowing their private business. Many entertaining situations develop quickly.

All the characters and the whole film have a great sprinkling of zany throughout. The dialogue is fun, the situations funny, and the character's foibles play off each other very entertainingly. Nothing and no one is taken too seriously, and it all adds up to a fun romp. Is the outcome predictable? Who cares?

The cast is good, with a lot of familiar faces that are fun to see together.

Anyone who adopts a sit-back-and-enjoy mindset should have a fun viewing experience.

cute, cute, cute. I laughed, I smiled, and I'd totally watch it again.

I was hoping to like this movie and thank God, I actually did. I mean, sure, I thought it would be funnier, but it was super enjoyable. It's exactly what a Christmas movie should be: cozy, light, and filled with charm. Alicia Silverstone still has that power that effortless presence that makes her so watchable. She's easygoing, clearly not taking herself too seriously, and just having a good time. And honestly, that's the whole point of this kind of movie: to have a good time. It's not about nostalgia it's about watching a genuinely good comedic actress shine. Special shoutout to Pearson Fodd, Jameela Jamil, and Timothy Innes, because they were the glue that held everything together. They made it extra funny, extra enjoyable, and extra X-mas (if that makes sense). When they're on screen, the movie just works. Story-wise, it's exactly what you expect from a Netflix Christmas film: nothing Oscar-worthy, but totally enjoyable and feel-good. It's the kind of movie you watch with cookies and milk and a blanket nearby. The script does its job I would've loved to see some parts developed more, but it serves its purpose. You can't have everything the way you want it... and honestly, that might just be the message of the movie itself.

Secondhand embarrassment

I love these kind of movies but this was.... Odd. The kids are oblivious to their mom's feelings, the mom is controlling but also loses it a lot, the dad says pretty much the most hurtful thing you can say to an ex-wife. I wanted to like this for Alicia Silverstone but the story was uncomfortable. Maybe watch it once?

Ugh

Alicia Silverstone is completely unlikable in this. Normally she's cute and quirky and fun but in this movie she's naggy and whiny and miserable. I would divorce her too. And the daughter's boyfriend is over the top weird. I love Harry Potter, but this guy is just... no. The best part about this whole movie are all of the side characters. The grandpas are adorable, Melissa Joan Hart is a good friend and keeps it real as do the people who run cafe. I get trying to have an amicable Christmas with your ex, but this is just stressful to watch and I still have 46 minutes to go. I'm sure it's going to end in some sappy way, but So far this has been the longest 45 minutes of a movie I've ever watched.

This film is annoying

From the extremely irritating characters, really bad acting that feels like stage improv, the predictable storyline, which I said to my wife "it is going to end with this happening and that happening". And sure enough, that's exactly how it happened.

Even though this same story has been made many times in more successful Christmas films, this one took the same idea and concept and spent 2 hours sitting down to write a really bad script. All the characters are very unlikeable, especially the massively over the top Harry Potter fanatic, Nigel. It's just a very bad attempt at a Christmas rom com. And so, I give it a one.

Oh No

I haven't seen a Christmas Rom Com Filmed In Canada that I didn't like in many years! A Merry Little Ex-Mas destroyed the good times. It's almost like it's a parody of a holiday rom com. I am not sure what it is but something about it I just really don't like. I am a fan of Alicia and think she does a great job but maybe it's the script or the editing. But something just doesn't quite take me there. So far I've laughed once, most of the time I am cringing because the comedy just isn't there. Sorry Melissa but...I just didn't like this like at all :(

Mindless Christmas Fun

I don't usually watch these movie types (Rom-Com). But it was one of the first new Christmas film I saw and I thought I'd try it. I think a lot of the viewers on here are WAY too critical. It's not some Oscar worthy classic. It's just supposed to be some fun watching. I think the most unfair criticisms are those involving Alicia Silverstone. You do understand she's playing a part, as written, right? Personally I think she looks pretty good. As far as the person who criticized her crooked smile and teeth, I find those 2 aspects of her, particularly cute and endearing. The same smile as in CLUELESS. Lighten up.

Cinema is in a really terrible place

I didn't expect much from this movie going into it, Netflix doesn't exactly have a track record of making worthy Christmas movies. I wasn't even entirely excited over the cast members, Oliver Hudson is a primarily television star actor and really not expected to shine in a big screen movie, Melissa Joan Hart still hasn't left the 1990s. Alicia Silverstone however, was once a golden girl of American cinema, never a serious dramatic actress but was respected enough from a global audience.

So to throw that away for a quick buck pretty much tells the story of modern day Hollywood, where actors are throwing away genuine talent for a quick payday.

Any respectable actor could of read this script and thought it would best to avoid. You expect this from low quality actors who just want to pay off some bills and appear in Hallmark type movies. But more than often now, once respectable actors are appearing in this trash, because Netflix can literally throw money at everything.

Script is over sentimental and woke, acting is dreadful, it has some hugely unfunny and stupid characters. Alicia plays a mom who comes across as having mental illness. It's just a really stupid movie.

And a sad glimpse into the current state of cinema.

A bit bland, missing Christmas sparkle

I had some hope for this film as I like the cast. Jameela was especially good. But it was missing that Christmas sparkle, and felt quite bland. The ending dragged out, and although I don't mind some predictability in Christmas movies, this ending didn't feel very special. Overall quite disappointing.

Total epic failure

The recipe for a successful Netflix Christmas Movie isn't hard. In fact, it's been quite successful in The Princess Switch, Knight Before Christmas, and others. All we the people want and need from these movies are an escape from our reality, smothered in lights, sweaters, egg nog and more. The blueprint is there - even with Melissa Joan Hart producing this movie - and it completely and utterly failed. Why? Because these characters - with the exception of Jameela and Nigel - are completely unlikable. I'll never understand why MJH passed this off to Alicia when she could have easily sold this movie with her effortless charm and delivered us an escape from reality. The script doesn't do them any favors - the nicknames "Betty and Al" are so stupid, and has nothing to do with the opposite gender. Nicknames should be not actual names! "I call her Mistle because we kissed under the mistletoe" - there, that alone that I just wrote was better than this entire script.

Alicia and Oliver have no chemistry. Now I'm a pro-environment voter through and through, but what's the last thing I want in a Netflix movie?! Alicia throwing out terrible dialogue about how everything Christmas is terrible for the environment!!! Again, we want an ESCAPE with these movies. Don't give me the harsh realities that I know! This is clearly why Alicia was an EP - but her activism doesn't belong in a movie like this.

It's also hard to believe a parent who is downright rude to both of her kids when she's so vulnerable at the holidays. She immediately hates the boyfriend and is non stop nagging the son for college essays - over Christmas break! Oliver is also dull and lame.

The two stars are solely for Jameela and Nigel, and the dads. These four were the only saving grace of this disastrous film. MJH should know better!

Its sweet, its cute, it's chrismassy, But lacks anything more

I adore seeing Christmas films and feeling hyped for the new year. This one's on every brits radar currently, and first thoughts would stem from average to perfectly mediocre experience, it fulls Inbetween them both. Nothing outstanding happens and the characters can be slightly unlikeable at times with the constant back and forth.

The Harry Potter guy seemed sweet and funny, but outside of that theirs really Nothing else. Even the main cast have little depth aside from a divorce and just getting new partners, it lacks any real depth. The couples even feel awkward trying to gain advantage of one another without really doing much on their own. It's played out for laughs, but it's just annoying and irritating to watch.

The couples look like they bearly know each other and it's just really bizarre. But the uncles are it's saving grace as they seemed fun to be around, and they have some better one-liners. Although that's not saying much, they still seem like they are happily together and their dynamic feels very fresh, due to their relentless back and forth tones that suit this movie nicely.

It's paced nicely, some scenes are fun to see and the characters all feel naturally written which is what I like, more natural here then in most scenes so as far as realism goes it feels very real. It doesn't seem so real as christmassy though, just seems like a plot-device to give the story some narrative and closure.

I think that because honestly theirs not much, mostly snow. But regardless it's a mindless, and entertaining flick without any real development or any drastic change in tempo from mediocre to good.

Meh..

Totally cheesy, clichéd,not unique or even original.

If you're looking for a predictable movie with a holiday theme.. Watch it!

Actors to acting was ok,cinematography decent & music fine.

Provided a few laughs,well.. as mentioned,cheesy.

Why does holiday movies need to be about a couple/family in crisis & things that bothered them, for months or years gets resolved.

Seen a few people feel this movie was propaganda, due to mentioning about being"earth friendly"perhaps but wasn't bothersome to the story.

Not something will rewatch,again.

Still got plenty of characters to go,sometimes a review doesn't need a novel written.. Phew! Reached the minimum required. Happy Holidays!

A good Christmas movie

A decent Christmas movie without the usual Hallmark cringe. Made me laugh genuinely a few times and had a nice Christmas spirit. I was pleasantly surprised. Good acting and good actors. Will it win a Oscar ? No. Will it give you a cozy Christmas watching experience without feeling plastic hallmark Christmas? Yes! Recommend for watching with loved ones during the holidays.

Wonderful, completely normal Christmas movie

In the sea of new movies that have been made, this one stands out for its attention-grabbing plot, fun atnosphere and great acting. Ignore all the negative comments, I really don't know what they are doing here. A wonderful, relaxing movie, after which you will know what you have just watched, unlike many others. All the actors performed their roles perfectly, and there is a family atmosphere as well as the care of loved ones that everyone needs more around holidays.
