Schoolgirl Miyuki (Elaiza Ikeda) doesn't notice the new transfer student Yasuhiko (Kei Adachi) until he suddenly appears out of nowhere in the library. Turns out that Yasuhiko is from the future, and he has time traveled to Miyuki's time because of a book set in that era that intrigued him. Miyuki subsequently visits herself ten years later and learns that the book in question is one that she herself will write, so she puts all her effort into writing the book. But ten years later, her younger self does not appear at the appointed time; what could have gone wrong to prevent the time loop from closing perfectly?
This is a very gentle and sweet (but not in the least bit saccherine) story taken from a 1983 novel and adapted for the screen by Makoto Ueda, the screenwriter for two other brilliant time-loop movies, "Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes" and "River." There are some very funny moments, and there are complications that it would be rude to spoil, so all that I will say here is that the actors are splendid, the setting is gorgeous and the tale itself is quite mind-boggling. One would think that the time-loop conceit would wear thin after several films, but this is as fresh as the previous two mentioned above, and quite poignant to boot. Highly recommended!
