Unstable was created by Victor Fresco, who also created the brilliant TV series better off Ted and Andy Richter controls you. Rob Lowe plays his usual charming jerk as a tech genius who overshadows his scientist son in a workplace comedy with a charming cast and excellent performances. Sean Clifford is excellent as Lowe's second in command and John Owen Lowe seems to have inherited his father's talent.
I had heard that season 2 was much worse, but the first episode was actually pretty good, even if they did weirdly kill off a romance that had been building through the entire first season and made a charmingly geeky character into a rather generically pretty one. But after that the show just got dumber and dumber and dumber. It was as though no one writing the show actually understood the show or its characters, perhaps because Victor Fresco had in fact left as showrunner after season 1.
I would give season 1 8 out of 10 Stars, but I couldn't even finish season 2, having given up after the execrable episode 6. If you average out the first episode of that season being decent and some of the others being watchable and some unknowns, I'll give it six out of 10 for season 2. But that may be generous.
There will be no season 3, and I can't be sad about that. I hope next time Victor Fresco sticks with this series past the first season, because he's clearly irreplaceable.
