This is the only film in which Alec Guinness and Stanley Holloway collaborated, and it is worth seeing just to watch these two greats of the British stage work together. The plot, in which a meek British bank worker formulates a clever plan to rob his own bank, is another wonderful comedy from Ealing Studios. Also watch for a cameo by Audrey Hepburn in one of her earliest film appearances. No hyperbole to call this a comedy classic.
John Huston was a great film maker, I'll give you that. Treasure of the Sierra Madre, African Queen, etc. Etc. Etc. Are deathless and I watch them repeatedly. But even a great artist can have an off day. As far as Under the Volcano goes, if watching a basically repulsive man stumble around drunk for two hours appeals to you, hey, go for it.
Incomprehensible. Not the film, but the user rating of 7.8, and the tearful encomia from folks who were moved. Let's say up front that Anthony Hopkins is fine ( as he in most everything he does). But at a little over two hours, the film is just too damn long. The nearest comparison I can make is The Straight Story, which is a similar tale - a man who makes a long and arduous journey and meets interesting people along the way. That movie is only slightly shorter, but it sustains its length and maintains our interest. After I nearly dozed off in Munro's journey I skipped through the other characters he met along the way to get to the main event. Aside from Hopkins the best character in the film is the kid. As for peeing on the lemon tree - eeuw. Not recommended.
