  • Great except ending

Nonsensical ending to an otherwise great miniseries. Great acting, great set pieces and interesting characters. But as other reviewers have pointed out...the ending made no sense at all.

I really enjoyed that it was set in the late 1980s. There were some interesting secondary stories as well. But that ending...kinda ruined it.

  • I personally loved it

Seems like it wasn't everybody's thing, but I found it engaging and the characters interesting. It also offered some good and timely lessons on themes such as forgiveness and gossip. It was much lighter than I was expecting it to be based on the first episode. Would have loved a season 2 but guess that isn't happening.

  • Decent romcom; leads had decent chemistry

Low stress and easy to watch flick with leads who had at least decent chemistry (far from always the case in these).

The script was light and breezy. The acting was good. I really enjoy the focus around cheese (I hadn't seen that done before). And I'm personally a sucker for festivals and competitions in these sorts of films.

    Overall a stress free watch.

  • Better than expected despite lack of lead chenistry

The first 45 minutes of this film are particularly good/sharp. The dialogue is fun and most importantly it doesn't try too hard.

The last half was pretty weak. They got sloppy with the script and a lot of plot holes developed. Lots of unintentionally funny moments, especially in the last 20ish minutes.

The leads were great and the entire cast did a phenomenal job, but the leads also had almost zero chemistry. The romance felt very forced.

But overall this was a much better film than I was expecting and I'd recommend as a light holiday date movie.

  • The gals seemed particularly pushy in this murder

I've given a pretty good review for the series overall, and this specific mystery is interesting in its own right, but just had to give a review on the ladies behavior in this one.

It's noticeably more intrusive and kind of obnoxious. It's nosy in a crime that none if them really have any connection to (at least in through the first episode).

While they've always been "a bit much" at times (in my opinion), they're pretty obnoxious here.

  • Other than community theatre level acting from male lead, it was fine

Disagree with reviews on here. The script was pretty good and the acting was actually really good...except for the male lead who couldn't act his way out of a paper bag.

I actually liked the premise and while it had a lot of the normal implausible plot points that is typical in this genre, I found it fun and heartwarming.

But yeah, the male lead's acting...oy vey.

  • Surprisingly mediocre

This show has all the pieces for a unique and entertaining detective show. The "art detective" angle has a lot of potential. The acting is also very good.

Unfortunately the plots are generally boring and the characters feel wooden. Four episodes in, and I can't say that I care about these characters. The mysteries themselves also feel wooden and formulaic.

The most telling part for me is that I don't feel compelled to watch the next episode after I finish the last. It's like the opposite of binge tv.

  • Silly, fun and cozy

Ridiculous cozy mystery like premises in a cozy mystery like setting. And it works. Doesn't try to be high art. As others have said, it is also funny (surprisingly funny I would say).

I need more characters so... Yummy, yummy, yummy I got love in my tummy and I feel like a-lovin' you Love, you're such a sweet thing, good enough to eat thing And it's just a-what I'm gonna do.

  • What did I just watch

I'm giving this film five stars simply because it is unique and creative. A low budget musical murder mystery is quite an idea.

But the unfortunate downside is that it's just not very good. My wife and I were convinced it was a parody for this first 45 minutes. And I do think it is played this way to an extent. But I do think they meant it in an earnest way.

  • A fever dream of a movie (in a good way)

Everything about this film subverts the audience's expectations (whether this is always intended or not is debatable). The acting is very (and I mean very) amateur, but in a surrealist campy way. Take Napoleon Dynamite and turn it up about 200 notches. That's this film.

The film's secondary characters are all, well, characters. It's really something you have to experience. Their collective actions and dialogue is somehow both surreal and realistic at the same time. I've literally never experienced anything like this film.

What makes it even more entertaining is the contrast between the main character in this film (who is quite normal) and the world that orbits around her.

The script is super creative and, like the characters it contains, continually subverts expectations.

There's quite a bit to be taken from this movie message-wise as well. And what those messages are really depends on the viewer. It's probably a bit of a Rorschach test in this respect. For example, I found the main themes to center around nihilism and a desire to try and derive meaning from this worldview. But I can see others finding different messages within.

I really recommend this film. If nothing else, it is a singular viewing experience.

  • Really decent little film

Interesting plot, decent acting and good characters. Overall this is a really solid film. If you've seen other films by this director you'll recognize some of the cast.

Doesn't take itself too seriously and was smart in getting actors with decent comedic timing. The script itself is pretty funny, but it's really the delivery by the various characters which sells it.

Taking off a couple of stars because it's definitely a lot more sexual than we thought going into it. It has a bit of low budget 1990s Showtime/Cinemax going on with that. So if you're looking for that...this is your movie. But I feel it could have been toned down a bit, because the film is great without that element.

  • Most of the movie was small talk date stuff between the leads

The first half of the movie felt super thin in terms of plot. Basically the first 40 minutes (and really most of the film overall) felt like a really long and boring series of first dates between two people.

After the initial plot points of her losing her job and boyfriend...nothing much happened for way too long. We spent way too much time with the leads getting to know one another.

In addition to a thin plot...the film also lacked any real humor and those other X factors which make these movies fun. It was really just boring.

The acting was decent but not great. But really...my biggest criticism is that this film was not entertaining.

  • Shockingly better and funnier than you'd think it would be

My wife and I just finished watching this gem of a film. It was - and I promise this isn't hyperbole - a shockingly good movie.

First off, it had a veteran cast who was clearly really feeling this film. They were having fun, and it shows. The chemistry between the leads felt real and meaningful. They really played well off each other. I wouldn't be surprised if some of the dialogue was ad libbed.

The rest of the cast was great too. All familiar faces to the lower budget romcom scene.

The story was also interesting and felt at least somewhat plausible, while still being light and goofy.

One more interesting thing- the film's plot development/acts was very unique. It was done in a free flowing way which felt real and fresh. I'm not explaining this well, but it will be clear to anyone watching it. They really made an unexpected effort to create a unique film experience.

I can't recommend this fun, wacky and thoughtful movie enough.

  • I really wanted to like this show

I get that not everything is for everyone, but I thought this show would be down my alley. I was mostly incorrect. It does get three stars for solid acting performances (no surprise there).

The biggest issue was the incessant laugh track. It was so over the top that one would think it was intended to be a self parody. The. Laugh. Track. Wouldn't. Ever. Stop

The other reason it could be mistaken as a self parody is that it was not funny. Like, at all. To the point that I thought it was intentionally being unfunny.

The premises were also convoluted, but this clearly was the least of its issues.

  • Yeah it's that good

Funny enough, I feel like the first episode was the weakest. But it comes into its own as the season progresses. Note that this review is just through episode 5.

At this point, there really isn't anything I can notably be critical of. At first I found the characters to be a bit one dimensional and frankly annoying. But now I don't feel that way.

Love the stand alone mystery in each episode. Perhaps they could focus a bit more on the missing brother, but really the point is that his disappearance sort of intentionally takes a back seat.

Words words words words to meet imdbs minimum requirement.

  • A decent romcom with an absolutely amazing soundtrack

Giving this older and under appreciated film some love in part for its amazing soundtrack. It's worth watching this film just for that. Unironically one of the best film soundtracks I've ever heard. The songs are all listed here on IMDb so no worries looking them up. I spent half the film constantly commenting about this to my wife.

As far as the film itself goes...better than the five stars it has here. It's funny and unexpectedly satirical. The leads have chemistry. The plot itself isn't that cringey. Everyone is likable. Frankly this film is much better than most current films in the genre who claim to be comedies yet are void of comedy.

  • Relaxing movie with bad casting/acting

First off, Jonathan Bennett being cast as a heterosexual love interest in 2021 (and a "country farmer" role at that) defies logic. And it shows in his acting and his relationship with the female lead.

I actually watched this movie because it sounded troupe-y. And it did not disappoint here. It was incredibly generic...and I loved this. Hence why it is getting four stars. Otherwise it would get one.

Because the acting was incredibly wooden. This is somewhat surprising given the seasoned veterans cast in this one. But wow was it bad. It felt like no one (except the little girl) really wanted to be in this film. The chemistry is non-existent. Any attempted banter falls flat.

My theory is that everyone involved secretly was a little embarrassed in Jonathan Bennett's puzzling role, including Bennett himself. So it just all comes across as awkward.

  • Unironically a fun movie

Ok let's get this out of the way first - this is a ridiculous film. Very little of it makes any sense. And it's also super fun. There's a reason it's become a bit of a cult classic.

It absolutely is the poster child for "it's so bad that it's good" films. Everything is so over the top (weed scene, soccer scene) that you can't help but be amused.

As for the "offensive stereotype" aspects...none are particularly mean. It's mostly just - once again - super ridiculous stuff like a Japanese guy who thinks he's Italian. And endless sexual innuendos directed at Hayden Christianson.

But bottom line is that on perhaps unintentional levels this film is entertaining.

  • Very good but not nearly as lighthearted as advertised

So most official writes ups for this series gives the impression that it has a general lighthearted tone. Or at minimum it has a lot of lighthearted moments. Objectively, neither of those things are true.

This is quite an emotionally heavy series which is gritty visually and story wise. In fact, I'd say that it's mostly a tragedy with the occasional happy moment sprinkled in. My guess is that people (including those involved in the series) really want to believe that it was light...but it absolutely isn't.

However it is well written and has some unique storylines. Costume and set design transport you to the 1840s. Well worth a watch but go in expecting a very serious period piece.

  • Refreshly funny parody on cozy mysteries

First off, this show isn't for everyone. I would say your average IMDb reviewer isn't the target audience, based on my experience reading IMDb reviewers.

It's sort of eye rolling for me to describe it this way, but it does have a "pre-woke" comedy feel. It's a combination of Curb Your Enthusiasm and Arrested Development, with maybe 50 percent more parody. The whole thing is meant to be ridiculous. If that description appeals to you, then this is your show.

I would say that it does somewhat become less consistently funny in the middle, but is bookended by solid laughs.

It's also a fun combination of very dirty jokes...but not much else in terms of actual sex or violence. It's the most shockingly clean show with non-stop sex jokes you might ever see.

  • Seasons 1,2 and 4 were great

This review is for the entire series, which I recently completed watching. The series was best when it tried to balance lightheartedness with drama. It was particularly great at this in seasons 1 and 4. The slip into an almost humorless drama began in Season 2, with Season 3 being almost void of light moments.

The acting was great throughout without exception. The characters were unique and engaging. The relationships felt real, although I wish they spent more time delving into those.

The series does require a surprising amount of disbelief suspension. And as I said, the hyperfocus on heavily emotional drama sucked a lot of fun out of this for me.

But overall it was a great series.

  • Really exceeded the expectations

I was expecting something much different (as in worse) when I saw the IMDb rating, but since my wife and I love these types of films we decided to watch anyways.

Glad we did. I wasn't perfect but very solid for the genre. It was unusual in that the middle act was by far the best. The beginning was a bit awkward and confusing. The ending tried too hard to be emotional. But the actual mystery portion (second act) was quite good.

The lead and frankly all the acting was good. Maybe not exceptional...but very good. The lead was likable, fun and believable.

The mystery itself was surprisingly well written. Unlike many films in the genre, clues were actually given throughout that could help the viewer solve it.

Overall I'm quite taken aback by the score and reviews here. This film deserves much better than this.
