This was a pleasant surprise. As a father who has spent days of my life sitting through the first two entries, I'm so relieved that the series shifted into a new gear.
The character development hit harder, the action was more exciting, and the humor hit new highs. The villains were three-dimensional and it was a joy spending the movie with the trio of Knuckles, Tails and Sonic operating with fully-formed friendship. It wasn't without nits to pick - I personally found the editing to be noticeably choppy at times - but the pros well outweigh the cons.
I can't stress enough that people familiar with the series will get a new and welcome take on how the series operates. Same chassis, new engine.

In hindsight, Barry was an absolutely magnificent show; if for nothing else then for its ability to know when to end and to do that with an incredible season. Everything was just firing on all cylinders: the pacing, the writing, the cinematography, the acting.
The care for the characters is what sways me most. Every supporting character became fully fleshed out over the course of the series and reached a compelling conclusion. It balanced the comedy and drama perfectly, and each heightened the other, and the characters never suffered for it.
The motto "show, don't tell" was clearly in the show's DNA, and the momentum was blistering (with a few intentional slowdowns). Reflecting on the fact that these episodes were 30 minutes is mind-boggling. It covered a ton of ground, but, again, never at the detriment of its characters.
Finally, Barry was a beautiful show to watch as well, peppering beautiful eeriness in to comment on the characters' mental state and incredible camera work throughout. A scene could start off with a hilarious joke, and continue into a two minute continuously shot action sequence. It was never boastful, but Barry new how to take risks and reach in support of its story.
It really is a gem, and I'm thankful it was made.
