One review said that this film encourages you to think. About what , I wonder. Don't get me wrong, this film is a phantastic study of one person's decent into hell. I found it touching because I actually know a person like that. But what impulse can I take away from this film? I'm just too ordinary to see any relevance in it. As a film it is well made. It shows a woman who first rebels against society, a person who cannot love and who eventually loses control. The tone of the film is uneven: at times it really is a very powerful disection of a person's psyche but at times it decends into farce. It's graphic but certainly not erotic in any way. All in all, it's certainly not a bad film but more style than substance.
Granted, it might be interesting why people turn away from acting and fame. There certainly are some interesting stories out there. But Laurie Zimmer was never really a star and probably just found out that she would never be. Making a living as an okay actress is hard. But this film is plainly annoying because it is not about Laurie Zimmer. It's a vanity project of a director who is frustrated because people don'tike her films. I have no idea if they are any good as I had never heard of her. But asking : "Where is Laurie Zimmer" while shouting at the same time "Me, me, me" doesn't work. And it might be an idea to respect if someone wants to retreat from the public eye. In the end it's as simple as that. Laurie Zimmer just wants some peace and quiet..
The Secret of my Success is one of the few comedies that even after all these years make me laugh out loud. Some critics claim that it is very 80s in terms that you can achieve anything if you put your mind to it. Actually, the film makes fun of that because the only way anyone achieves anything in this film is by sleeping with someone. It begins with some really funny scenes when countryboy Michael Fox comes to New York and is completely out of his depth. The scene in which he conducts the sex act of his neighbours is hilarious. The main story is about him leading a double life in the company with all the ensuing mix ups. And there is of course the obligatory love story. It all comes together beautifully and you end up with a perfectly timed comedy.
