I saw this movie in the late 80's when I was in my early 20's I already then could see how this movie made fun of us teenagers of the eighties but also the little hints the movie gave not to be a ...... Seeying in 2025 i'm still liking it and thinking how lucky I was growing up in the 70's and 80's when comon sense was still there and weakness was something to be ashamed of.
That's why, the negative reactions from some people here are even more hilarious than the film itself. Rasism! Sexism! Stereotypes!!! It was just a comedy, you crybabies. Stop Whining.
The eighties were a hell of a lot more fun to be a teenager then nowadays. Sure, there were problems and we had to work hard and because of that we partied hard. It beats staring at a cellphone for hours per day and complaining online every day!

The question with this series is if you still have an open mind and you still have imagination. It is recorded in a time when computers were not used to create effects and therefore mindlessness wasn't a thing as it is today. CGI or AI were still decades away and chromakey was a new development in the Netherlands.
"Kunt u mij de weg naar Hamelen vertellen meneer" (Can you tell me the road to Hamelen, sir) goes on were the fairytale "The Pied Piper of Hamelin" ended. The imagination of Hary Geelen, the writer of the story was virtually unlimited and gave us a series that only ended because the television studio (KRO) wanted it to end, not because it had lost its popularity. Ratings of 45% were not unheard of at the time which pretty much means that a complete generation grew up with this series.
As it is an extension of a fairytale you need to have imagination to like "Kunt u mij de weg naar Hamelen vertellen meneer". Next to this you need to be able to recognize the era this series was recorded, a time when life was far less fast paced as it is today. When you can't, you'll get reactions like "effects are laughable" or "my children shook their heads in dismay" These are the kind of people everything needs to be fed as minced dog food, and CGI or AI becomes of utmost importance for them to still be able to like a television series or movie.
You also needed the people at the television studio's to have a good head on their shoulders which could recognize the quality of a series. As this was already a big problem back then the biggest part of the series was erased as they were recorded on Ampex tapes which were considered to expensive. History now shows how incredibly stupid this was because to make a series like this with the quality of cast today would be priceless and therefore impossible and the money KRO could have made with re-runs and DVD-series would have covered the cost of an Ampex tape with ease.
Thank God the Writer of the series, Harry Geelen, saw how incredibly stupid it was to erase the series and decided to record the series with the Akai VT-100 VTR system at first in Black and white and later with the Philips N-1500 in Color. In the early nineties it was tried to bring out these recordings on VCR, but a quarrel made sure that Harry Geelen lost the videotapes forever, and the series were not saved more than 50 years after original broadcasting leaving the recordings in a deeply bad state. Therefore, these recordings are only suitable for an exceedingly small audience, and a lot of scenes are probably lost forever unless there are still recordings out there that yet have to be discovered.

Most reactions here seem to come from people who are fans or took part in the infamous "Disco demolition night", people who were afraid that their favorite music style Rock would die out, utterly ridiculous as clearly proven now 46 years later. Rock is still there as is disco only now it's called electronic dance music.
This said, disco was a style of music that didn't belong on the radio as much as it did and as electronic music is now, so I can somewhat understand those people. History shows that as soon as something becomes a hype, radio stations pick it up and destroy it by overplaying songs and because everybody wants a piece of the cake the quality of the genre starts to suffer big time. Remember "Paradise by the dashboard light", I want you to want me, or Bohemian Rhapsody? What about "I can't get no satisfaction". Not Disco, but Rock and also played till people got utterly sick of it.
As I am a person who likes pretty much all kinds of music I can only feel sorry for people being so narrow-minded that they can just like on style of music whatever which style, or think that they need to organize a stupid event like Disco Demolition Night, just because they can't stand disco while the majority of people obviously did. Grow the hell up and stop stating that disco died. It just went underground again as it was before the hype and what is wrong with music that makes people happy and want them to have a good time. If you don't like it, change the station, if no other station can be found turn the radio off or play your own playlist. The technology was already there in the seventies.
As for the movie, no its not a masterpiece, and yes, "I love you to death and "milkshake are really bad. But as a person who dwelled in nightlife from around 1987 till 2011 the way everybody acts really is pretty recognizable for me of what I saw in the real life nightscene.
It's just a feel-good movie nothing more, nothing less and something we certainly can use nowadays as the majority of people now are Zombies stuck to their smartphone and their one sided narcistic views. It certainly doesn't make this world a better place.
