You won't hear me say that "Crash and Burn" is a genius movie, but it's undeniably an imaginative and uniquely versatile movie! The brainchild of Charles Band and writer J. S. Cardone is a mix of post-apocalyptic Sci-Fi, dystopian Sci-Fi, and cyborg/robot slasher! Where else can you find that? Post-apocalyptic because the story takes place in 2030 and something bad must have happened to the climate, because the sun burns terribly and you can't go outside without a cooling suit. Dystopian Sci-Fi because there is a global corporate corporation - Unicom - that forbids people from having computers and wants to execute resistance fighters from small clandestine TV stations. And, finally, cyborg/robot slasher because - in the end - the story simply boils down to a murder spree by a robot hanging together with cables, chips and little red lights.
After a weak and confusing beginning, "Crash & Burn" becomes a very amusing slasher with a lot of violence, gore, and (not so) functional nudity. It's not subtle, but that also isn't necessary for good old-fashioned straight-to-video trash from the early 90s. Nice B-movie cast too, including Bill Moseley, Jack McGee, and Rachel Ward.

Jake Gyllenhaal is a 911 emergency operator who clearly doesn't belong behind a desk. He is a man of action, and of the field, and with every call he receives he obviously prefers to go out to the streets himself to solve the emergency. While terrible wildfires rage in Los Angeles, Joe receives a call from a woman who is fell victim to kidnapping and can only pass on little information over the phone. Joe does what he can to save the woman, and gradually the reason why he's working from behind a desk is revealed.
"The Guilty" is not a remake of "The Call", with Halle Berry, but of a Danish film I never heard of. The story is actually nothing special and, in fact, fairly predictable; - and that applies to the outcome of the abduction as well as to the mental process that Joe undergoes. Still, the film is worth seeing, if only for the umpteenth great acting performance by Jake Gyllenhaal. He is by far the best actor of his generation and effortlessly carries the entire film alone. There are hardly any other characters, only faceless voices on the phone. Strong role by Gyllenhaal, but otherwise a forgettable thriller/drama.

On paper, this sounds like mandatory viewing for every self-respecting film fanatic. A good rating and positive reviews everywhere, a widely acclaimed director, four fabulo actors in the cast, and a story that always intrigues; - namely that of a former gangster chased by hitmen because he dared to be a key witness in court.
Well, a lot of people might pretend "The Hit" is a great sleeper, but I'm honest enough to admit that I didn't like it one bit. What a boring, implausible, and utterly useless movie! This is one of those scripts where the characters behave like no normal person ever would! No one accepts that he will be executed. No hitman is as enigmatic as John Hurt or as outspoken as Tim Roth. Frears shows Spain from its most boring side, and the local top actor Fernando Rey is terribly underused.
