Hugo Van Lawick est né le 10 avril 1937 à Soerabaja, Soerabaja, Dutch East Indies [aujourd'hui Surabaya, East Java, Indonesia]. Il était directeur de la photographie et producteur. Il est connu pour People of the Forest: The Chimps of Gombe (1988), Jane (2017) et The Leopard Son (1996). Il était marié à Jane Goodall. Il est mort le 2 juin 2002 à Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
