Black Bear to Release Sydney Sweeney Boxing Drama ‘Christy’ in Height of Awards Season
Image
“Christy,” a sports drama that features a transformative performance from “Euphoria” star Sydney Sweeney as a female boxer, will be released by Black Bear in theaters in the thick of awards season.

Heading into the Toronto Film Festival where it will premiere, “Christy” was one of the hottest acquisition targets, but Black Bear, which financed the picture, has decided to take it off the board and make it the inaugural release of its fledgling distribution label. The film is a biopic of Christy Martin, a Wbc female super welterweight champ. It’s directed by Sundance Grand Jury Prize winner David Michôd (“Animal Kingdom”) and co-stars Ben Foster, Merritt Wever, and Katy O’Brian. “Christy” will be released in theaters nationwide on Nov. 7 and Black Bear plans to mount an Oscar campaign for the picture and for Sweeney’s performance, which is said to be chameleonic.

“We’re thrilled about the upcoming release of ‘Christy,...

‘Superman’ Sequel ‘Man of Tomorrow’ Sets July 2027 Release Date
Image
David Corenswet will dust off his red trunks soon, as a sequel to James Gunn’s summer hit “Superman” will fly into theaters in less than two years.

Director and DC Films co-head James Gunn took to social media on Wednesday to announce an official title and release date for the project. “Superman: Man of Tomorrow” will hit theaters on July 9, 2027.

In his announcement, Gunn included a comic book image of Superman standing next to Lex Luthor in his Warsuit, a pretty clear signal that the sequel will continue to focus on Luthor’s antipathy for the Man of Steel. In the DC comics, Luthor (played by Nicholas Hoult in the film) creates the suit in order match Superman’s strength and abilities; it seems that after the failure of his plan to use a clone of Superman to defeat him in Gunn’s first film, Luthor has decided that...

Jordan Peele’s Next Movie After ‘Nope’ Removed From 2026 Release by Universal
Jordan Peele
Jordan Peele’s fourth film as a director appears to be taking longer than expected.

Universal Pictures has unset the Oscar winner’s next project from its release calendar, which was last dated for October 2026. Peele is currently at work on the film, which has yet to roll cameras, an individual familiar with the project told Variety.

Originally, the follow-up to his 2022 hit movie “Nope” was scheduled to open over Christmas 2024; following the guild strikes, the film was then pushed to next Halloween. Universal had no comment. Reps for Peele did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

As per usual with Peele’s directorial efforts, nothing is known about the movie’s plot, though its been categorized as a horror thriller. But speaking on the “Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend” podcast in Jan. 2024, Peele said, “I do feel like my next project is clear to me, and I...

Mark Ruffalo Teases Lena Dunham’s ‘Very Twisted’ Netflix Movie ‘Good Sex’ and Role Model’s Acting Debut
Image
Mark Ruffalo will soon be seen on the small screen in “Task,” back on HBO in the original drama series debuting Sunday, September 7. Brad Ingelsby’s follow-up to “Mare of Easttown” centers on the “I Know This Much Is True” Emmy winner as an FBI Task Force agent assigned to a string of armed robberies, led by a family man (Tom Pelphrey), who hardly fits the profile of a career criminal.

IndieWire caught up with Ruffalo at the NYC premiere of the series, fresh off the heels of wrapping Lena Dunham’s next feature, “Good Sex,” a few weeks ago in New York City. “I had the best time working with Lena,” Ruffalo told IndieWire. “I love her.”

“I knew her a little bit when she was younger,” he continued. “But we had the best time, Natalie Portman, Role Model, [and I]. It’s twisted — Lena’s stuff can be very twisted.

Macaulay Culkin Says John Candy Noticed His Dad Was a ‘Monster’ During ‘Uncle Buck’ Filming, So Candy Kept Checking In: ‘You Doing Good? Everything’s Alright?’
Image
Before “Home Alone” turned Macaulay Culkin into a child actor icon, it was “Uncle Buck” (released in theaters one year before) that first put the young star on the map. The John Hughes-directed comedy was headlined by John Candy as a reckless bachelor who is forced to babysit his nieces and nephews. In the new documentary “John Candy: I Like Me,” which opened the Toronto International Film Festival, Culkin remembers Candy’s kindness on set and reveals Candy was one of the first people to notice there was trouble brewing at home.

“I think that’s why that’s one of my favorite performances, because I think he put a lot of himself into it,” Culkin said (via Entertainment Weekly). “[Most actors] don’t know how or don’t like to work with kids… they’re tricky to work with, but John was always really kind and really good. He showed a lot of respect.

The Conjuring: Last Rites Makes One Thing Very Clear About The Future Of The Franchise

Image
Bing Liu, the writer/director born in China until his family moved him to the United States when he was five, has a Best Documentary Oscar nomination for his 2018 feature “Minding the Gap,” about male skateboarders in Rockford, Illinois.

His narrative feature debut, “Preparation for the Next Life,” is produced by Orion Pictures and Plan B, from Brad Pitt, Jeremy Kleiner, and Dede Gardner — all following a similar path as Oscar-nominated docmaker RaMell Ross’ own narrative feature debut “Nickel Boys,” also produced by Orion and Plan B, and also set up at Amazon/MGM Studios, and also a literary adaptation of an acclaimed novel. So why the hell is the studio burying Liu’s film with a September 5 release date in the middle of fall festival season, and without sending it to any festivals?

South Park Season 27 Wages Hilarious War On Two Very Different 2025 Menaces
Image
This episode contains spoilers for "South Park" season 27, episode 4, "Wok is Dead."

"South Park" season 27 is firing on all cylinders. After a few years away, the adult cartoon is back with one of its best seasons yet, and it's so far managed to capture a combination of relatively wholesome childhood fun, raunchy and vulgar humor, and biting satire all at the same time. Indeed, the new episodes of "South Park" continue to deliver some very timely commentary by going relentlessly after the twice-impeached convicted felon Donald Trump and his entire presidential administration. The show's latest episode, "Wok is Dead," even has Trump impregnating the Prince of Darkness himself, Satan, with a hellspawn.

‘Bravo Bene!’ Review: An Over-Extended Italian Industry In-Joke
Image
The last time Italian filmmaker and humorist Franco Maresco was in competition at Venice, with his Cosa Nostra-baiting 2019 mockumentary “The Mafia is No Longer What It Used To Be,” he won the Special Jury Prize. If that title is unfamiliar to you, you haven’t been negligent. Even high-level festival awards can only do so much to raise the profile of films that aren’t built to travel, and Maresco’s unabashedly local brand of satire — steeped in cultural and political reference points with little resonance outside Italy — is as good an example as any. Despite another competition berth on the Lido, his new film “Bravo Bene!” is unlikely to buck that trend.

Inviting considerations of what the equivalent Italian term might be for “inside baseball” — “inside soccer” is too universally scrutable, surely — “Bravo Bene!” doubles or even triples down on the insularity by taking as its subject the director himself.

Venice vs. Telluride: Screen Talk Picks the Best and Worst of the Fall Fests So Far
Image
The fall festival firehose has opened. We’re now inundated with new movie premieres, with Telluride wrapped and Venice heading into its final weekend.

On this episode of IndieWire’s “Screen Talk” podcast, IndieWire Editor-at-Large Anne Thompson and Executive Editor Ryan Lattanzio break down the highs and lows of the fall festival circuit so far, from the standouts to the surprising misfires. Anne was in Telluride, which overlapped with Venice in programming a suite of Netflix titles, including Guillermo del Toro’s lushly mounted “Frankenstein” (we’re somewhat split on that one; Anne’s a perennial del Toro head) and Noah Baumbach’s “Jay Kelly.”

Starring George Clooney as an aging Hollywood star staring down a potential PR crisis after a scuffle with a former acting class peer, it’s Baumbach’s most sentimental movie yet, though Clooney and Adam Sandler as his manager are likely to score Oscar nominations.

Spain’s Latido Films Snaps Up Dominican Family Drama ‘Pérez Rodríguez,’ Market Debuts at Toronto (Exclusive)
Image
Spain’s Latido Films has pounced on the worldwide sales rights to family drama “Peréz Rodríguez,” which market debuts at the Toronto Film Festival (TIFF).

Produced by the Dominican Republic’s Lantica Studios, the debut feature of writer-director Humberto Tavárez is an incisive yet heartfelt portrait of a Dominican family caught in the grip of generational conflict.

When tragedy strikes, the return of the patriarch’s illegitimate son fractures their carefully maintained facade, revealing long-suppressed tensions and hypocrisies. Told over the course of three celebratory gatherings, the film casts a wry look at Dominican identity, middle-class idiosyncrasies and the fragile threads that bind a family together.

“‘Peréz Rodríguez’ is an extraordinary film that dissects, like few others, the contradictions inherent among wealthy families in Latin America,” said Latido’s Antonio Saura, who hailed the pic’s acting, directing and surprise ending, in particular.

“The film keeps your attention throughout and...

‘Die My Love’ Trailer: Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson Play a Couple Falling Into Psychosis in Lynne Ramsay’s Cannes Favorite
Image
It’s been eight years since audiences got to experience Lynne Ramsay’s singular vision in a feature film, but her new movie “Die My Love” will arrive in theaters just in time for awards season.

The drama is set in rural Montana. Jennifer Lawrence plays a woman having serious trouble adjusting to motherhood. Robert Pattinson is her not-always-helpful husband in this intense psychological drama. Sissy Spacek, Nick Nolte and Lakeith Stanfield also star.

“Die My Love” premiered in competition at Cannes Film Festival back in May. Distributor and streaming service Mubi bought distribution for the film in a major deal totaling $24 million, landing rights for North America and various international territories. That acquisition came a year after Mubi bought “The Substance” ahead of its Cannes premiere, before turning the horror movie into a major awards player. Intriguingly, the teaser for “Die, My Love” name-checks “the studio behind ‘The Substance...

‘Die My Love’ Teaser: Lynne Ramsay Directs Jennifer Lawrence in a Visceral Portrayal of Postpartum Depression
Image
Lynne Ramsay has never been one to shy away from disturbing portrayals of challenging subject matter, and her new film “Die My Love” sees the auteur probing the depths of postpartum depression.

Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson star as a married couple who move to the countryside after having their first child, with Lawrence’s Grace losing herself in a psychosexual frenzy as she adapts to her new life with a baby.

The film premiered at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, where IndieWire’s Ryan Lattanzio wrote that “I don’t think there has ever before been such a psychologically immersive view of postpartum depression as ‘Die My Love’ onscreen. The film careens between a dreary sludge of despair and eventual heart-palpitating nightmare, Grace caught in a mercurial storm of her own moods without ballast and unable to be understood by those around her.”

Alejandro Amenábar Unpacks Historical Adventure ‘The Captive’
Image
Packed with panoramic shots of a 1575 Algiers, “The Captive,” from Oscar-winning director Alejandro Amenábar, weighs in as one of the biggest Spanish movies of 2025 and a broad audience play.

It’s an adventure tale, set over the years from 1575-1580, focusing on “Don Quixote” author Miguel de Cervantes as a young Spanish soldier languishing in an Algiers jail after capture by Ottoman corsairs. There, however, Cervantes (Julio Peña) discovers his power of storytelling. Enthralling both fellow captives and the Bey of Algiers, Cervantes, his spirit unbroken, also imagines a daring escape plan.

“The Captive” feels at time as historical epic, such as in a majestic sweep across the port of Ottoman Empire Algiers, later seen from its highest building, a higgedly-piggedly hotchpotch of favela-like houses, stretching down to the sea.

At others, however, as Amenábar says, it tries to capture Cervantes’ soul. “The Captive” begins with an aged Miguel de Cervantes writing “Don Quixote,...

Peacemaker Season 2 Makes The Two Suicide Squad Movies Even More Confusing
Image
Hoist that Flag: This article contains spoilers for "Peacemaker" season 2, episode 3, "Another Rick Up My Sleeve."

Peacemaker (John Cena) has a serious Flag problem. Not only does he feel guilty about killing Rick Flag Jr. (Joel Kinnaman) in 2021's "The Suicide Squad" (2021), but Rick Flag Sr. (Frank Grillo) knows all about this, and as the new head of A.R.G.U.S., he's in prime position to do whatever he can to get on Peacemaker's case. If all of that wasn't enough, the opening of "Peacemaker" season 2, episode 3 ("Another Rick Up My Sleeve") adds yet another twist to the show's ever-expanding Flag game by bringing back Rick Jr.

In a flashback scene,...

Stand or Fall: The Remarkable Rise of Brighton and Hove Albion review – a football epic for the ages
With no home ground and one match away from non-league competition, the Seagulls’ climb up to the Premier League is one of the game’s great success stories

The tidal wave of streaming landfill, football club reality series, part of the seemingly bottomless pit of sport industry content, means that cutting through is tougher than ever, especially for single-instalment films that can’t rely on surfing some sort of wave of tournament triumph nostalgia. Access isn’t enough; you really need a good story, and this account of the rise, fall and rise again of Brighton & Hove Albion – while “authorised” up the wazoo – has certainly got that.

Brighton’s...

Foundation Season 3's Biggest Moment Reveals The Show's True Protagonist [Exclusive]
Image
This article contains spoilers for "Foundation" season 3, episode 9.

The Apple TV+ series "Foundation" has earned the ire of many hardcore fans of Isaac Asimov's seminal book series of the same name due to creator and showrunner David S. Goyer changing a great many things from the source material. Faithful or not, what is undeniable is that one of the show's biggest changes may very well end up as the biggest legacy of "Foundation": the Cleons.

These characters are three emperors, all clones of the original emperor: One as a young man titled Brother Dawn (Cassian Bilton), one as a middle-aged man titled Brother Day (Lee Pace), and one...

The European film and TV industry needs to increase its focus on audience needs and to embrace EU-based technology if it is to become more competitive in the face of growing market penetration by global giants.

San Sebastian Festival Slams Benjamin Netanyahu Israeli Government over Genocide in Gaza, as It Announces J.A. Bayona Lead Jury
Image
Read out by San Sebastián Festival Director, José Luis Rebordinos and Head of Communications Ruth Pérez de Anucita as the festival revealed on Friday full details of its 73rd edition’s attending stars and directors, the festival statement against Gaza genocide comes two days after organisers of the Vuelta de España, Spain’s equivalent of the Tour de France, halted the cycling race three kilometres from its finish in neighbouring Bilbao out of safety concerns as massed peaceful Gaza protestors threatened to spill over barricades into the cyclists’ path.

Protesters, many older adults, were calling for the expulsion of the Israel-Premier Tech team which was stopped last week during a time trial by activists holding Palestinian flags.

San Sebastián has a long tradition as a focus of pro-democracy protest under Franco and, after democracy was won in general elections of 1977, of screening political and social issue movies. Friday’s press...

Orson Welles Meets AI in a Restoration of ‘The Magnificent Ambersons’ — and Its Lost Ending
Image
The lost 43 minutes of Orson Welles‘ “The Magnificent Ambersons” is the holy grail of cinema. The legend goes that after a bad test screening, Rko tacked on a happy ending and chopped the film from 131 minutes to 88. The missing minutes were melted for their silver nitrate, but cinephiles have spent years seeking a print that retained the the footage; TCM even sponsored a trip to Brazil in pursuit of a complete print.

Like other efforts, Brazil didn’t pan out. Welles believed that the studio butchered a movie that would be seen as greater than his debut, “Citizen Kane,” but would he have used generative AI if it offered the possibility of recreating what he lost?

Showrunner, which bills itself as the “Netflix of AI,” is either betting Welles would. It is using “The Magnificent Ambersons” to develop its latest model, Film-1, which Showrunner hopes will let people generate lifelike short films.

Image
Revered Italian auteur Marco Bellocchio, who is at the Venice Film Festival with HBO series “Portobello,” is set to make a high-end biopic titled “Falcon” about charismatic auto industry executive Sergio Marchionne who saved Fiat and Chrysler from the brink of bankruptcy.

Shooting on “Falcon” is expected to start in 2026 in Italy, the U.S. and Canada.

The project is written by Bellocchio with Ludovica Rampoldi, Andrea di Stefano, Stefano Rulli and with the collaboration of Oliviero Del Papa. “Falcon” is being produced by Simone Gattoni for Kavac Film, by Mattia Mor for Emotion Network and Rai Cinema.

Marchionne, who was Italian and Canadian, died in 2018 at 66. He was hired by Italy’s Agnelli family to run Fiat in 2004 when, due to previous mismanagement plus the recession, few in the auto industry believed it could be saved. Then, in 2009, when Chrysler was guided into a U.S. government-led bankruptcy, Marchionne...

Peacemaker Season 2 Episode 3 Features The Return Of A Surprise Dceu Character
Image
Spoilers for "Peacemaker" season 2, episode 3, "Another Rick up my Sleeve," to follow.

James Gunn's DC Universe is confusing sometimes, especially in regard to its relationship with the DC Extended Universe. Gunn, for example, has confirmed that the Dceu's Blue Beetle is officially canon in his new cinematic universe (albeit with a few tweaks), as he believes the character occupies a unique spot in the timeline. "Peacemaker" is similarly unpredictable, with its season 1 finale having featured the Dceu's Justice League only for season 2 to pull off a wild retcon by replacing the aforementioned heroes with the Justice Gang. What's more, the confusion doesn't end there, as "Peacemaker" season 2, episode 3, "Another Rick up my Sleeve,...

Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow… what does James Gunn’s new Superman title mean?
Ray J and Shaquille O'Neal in Justicier d'acier (1997)
In Superman: Man of Tomorrow, will the Man of Steel team up with Lex Luthor? Duke it out with him in the galaxy’s most unexpected custody battle? Or tackle climate change and LGBTQ+ rights?

Is tomorrow just another day, as the adage goes? Or is it suddenly a franchise-within-a-franchise, a special wing of the nascent DC Universe focused in hard on what all those nutty Kryptonian super-cousins have been up to? What we do know, thanks to studio boss James Gunn in a series of social media splurts, is that Tomorrow is most definitely the future. Gunn has revealed that his follow-up to Superman will be titled Superman: Man of Tomorrow,...

Jacob Elordi in Frankenstein (2025)
Meet your descendants – and your future self! A trip to Venice film festival’s extended reality island
Jacob Elordi in Frankenstein (2025)
A flourishing lineup of immersive storytelling experiments are taking visitors into novels, nightclubs and outer space

In the largest cinema at the Venice film festival, guests gather for the premiere of Frankenstein, Guillermo del Toro’s lavish account of a man who dared to play God and created a monster. When the young scientist reanimates a dead body for his colleagues, some see it as a trick while others are outraged. “It’s an abomination, an obscenity,” shouts one hide-bound old timer, and his alarm is partly justified. Every technological breakthrough opens Pandora’s box. You don’t know what’s going to crawl out or where it will then choose to go.

Balkan Cinema Surges Into Fall Festivals After Banner Year for Filmmakers From Southeast Europe
Image
It’s been an uncharacteristically strong year for Balkan cinema, with filmmakers from the southeastern corner of Europe fighting — often against all odds — to bring their stories to the screen, despite challenges ranging from civil unrest to moribund support from state-backed funding bodies.

Nevertheless, this year has seen the return of old masters, like Romanian provocateur Radu Jude (“Dracula”), and the emergence of fresh voices, such as Slovenia’s Urška Djukić (“Little Trouble Girls”), alongside triumphs including North Macedonian director Georgi M. Unkovski’s dual Sundance prizewinner “DJ Ahmet” and Croatian director Igor Bezinović’s Rotterdam-winning docu-drama “Fiume O Morte!”

That momentum has carried into the fall festivals, where North Macedonian directors Teona Strugar Mitevska (“The Happiest Man in the World”) and two-time Academy Award nominee Tamara Kotevska (“Honeyland”) both launched their latest works at the Venice Film Festival. They were joined on the Lido by veteran Bulgarian filmmaker Stephan Komandarev...

Venice Film Festival shakes up Oscar and Bafta races
Image
Long considered the preeminent film festival to launch a title into awards season, Venice experienced a modest wobble last year – at least in comparison to Cannes.

Venice titles earned two of the 10 best picture Oscar nominations versus three from Cannes. In addition to The Brutalist and I’m Still Here, several other films ended last year’s Venice Film Festival as seeming contenders – notably Queer, Babygirl and Golden Lion winner The Room Next Door – but then failed to score any actual nominations at either Oscar or the Bafta Film Awards.

Venice competitor Joker: Folie A Deux was positioned as an awards contender going into the festival,...

Vanessa Paradis, M83 Reteam With ‘Knife + Heart’ Director Yann Gonzalez for Macabre Thriller ‘I’ll Forget Your Name’
Image
“Knife + Heart” director Yann Gonzalez has reunited with frequent collaborators Vanessa Paradis and M83 frontman Anthony Gonzalez — the filmmaker’s brother — on “I’ll Forget Your Name,” a gothic drama selected for this year’s Venice Gap-Financing Market.

Written and directed by Gonzalez, produced by Paris-based Pan Cinema, with music by the other Gonzalez, the film follows a 50-year-old instructor in a small village whose nightly cruising encounters take a darker turn when she falls for a young man who soon vanishes, sending her down a mysterious and nightmarish path.

Building on their experience with “Knife + Heart,” which premiered in competition at Cannes in 2018, Gonzalez crafted this new project specifically for Paradis. Kinology is handling global sales, with Chanel supplying key costumes.

“This comes from a more personal place and is less referential than my previous films,” Gonzalez explains. “It centers on a woman my own age,...
