Yasuhiro Nightow originally started out the story as a a vampire hunting story in a contemporary city. The final product turned out more humorous and fantastic, distinctly influenced by Nightow's Trigun (1998) series.
The team of heroes is named Libra. Libra is Latin for "weighing scales", which represents maintaining balance and order.
The Black and White storyline is a series-only story that does not appear in the manga comic.
Shinji Ogawa was originally cast as Gilbert F. Altstein, but due to poor health he had to back out and was replaced with Banjô Ginga.
Kekkai Sensen adapts a select 12 chapters from the first 6 volumes of the manga it is based on while adding a new plotline and characters, culminating in an anime-exclusive ending. Aside from the first episode which adapts the three-chapter pilot, each episode adapts one chapter.
