A serial killer (Lora Burke) and her next victim form an unexpected relationship.
While I typically do not write reviews in the first person, this one warrants it because I was affected so directly. The film had me hooked in under three minutes by the delivery of narration, the music and its overall tone. Even before I understood who Agnes was or what her role in the story would be, I felt that I wanted to know. And this hook had me wriggling on the line for the duration of the film.
This early hook is actually crucial to the film's success. Approximately one-quarter of the way in, things become darker and there is a tension that provides no relief. This tension, too thick for any knife, continues on for the remainder of the film. Had it started out that say, I may have been tempted to turn it off or at least look away. This is not entertainment, but a form of torture. You will find yourself yelling at the screen, "You idiot! Why don't you run?"
As strange as it may sound, I mean "torture" in the most complimentary way. While this is not a feel-good movie, it clearly is not intended to be. If the audience feels uncomfortable, I am sure the director (Navin Ramaswaran) is quite happy about this mission accomplished. The downside is that such a film does not lend itself to repeated viewings, but at least for those who watch it once, it is something that is likely to stick with you.
Which leaves only one thing left to praise: the fine work from actress Lora Burke. Although a film actress since 2012, this is likely the breakout role for Burke. She successfully goes through the wide range of crazy, from lovable to terrifying. Her narration (as noted above) is so measured, it drives the plot forward. Having had some bad relationships in my time (though none that reached the point of murder), Burke hit all the right notes for me. I felt I was reliving all my worst days. Again, not entertaining, but highly effective in evoking motions.
"Poor Agnes" debuts at Grimmfest on October 6, 2017. Although the audience might want to take a shower after seeing it, I highly recommend that they do.

Agnes (Lora Burke) is a cold-hearted beauty living alone in a remote home. She sells man's items to the local pawn shop. She's contacted by Mike Mercer (Robert Notman) pretending to be a CNN reporter. When he shows up, he reveals that he's actually an investigator looking for a missing man. She's a serial killer. What's a girl to do but have sex with the guy and chain him up. He becomes her submissive and she brings home Chris.
The first hour is an interesting little two-hander. At times, it's almost a black comedy. Burke has a nice dark deadpan psychotic anger. The actors are not top notch or well known but they are able to play the parts. I'm fascinated to see this with two bigger actors. Mike needs something to make him more submissive. He should be a bespectacled nerd or maybe an overweight loser like Chris. Agnes would be more compelling if she has more humor in her character. She definitely has the crazy girlfriend vibe. Mike just needs to be weaker or more psycho-adjacent.

The plot featuring a female serial killer is intriguing and the performance is shockingly of high quality.
Bumped into this randomly on a streaming website and thought this is another low budget crap but this is actually a decent piece of work with some really interesting tweaks. Of course it's no where near a masterpiece but the creativity as illustrated in the script and camerawork is worthy of rounds of applause. I don't think the 5.5 rating serve the movie justice at all and look forward to seeing more work from the leading actress. A great entertainment watch while also touching upon gender dynamics and challenging viewer's pre set conceptions.

This film has me enthralled from start to finish. The creativity and thought that went into this was evident. I would highly reccomend watching again, again and again. A job well done from an incredible cast and crew!
A TOTAL PIECE OF GARBAGE - SPEND YOUR TIME MORE WISELY. WATCHING THIS ISN'T IT. SHOULD NOT EVEN GET A "1" BUT THERE IS NO CATEGORY FOR "0". SIMPLY SHOWS PERSONS IN A LEGAL CAPACITY AS TOTALLY STUPID. DAH.

- GaffesAt 1:24:00 during the gas station scene, a man at the station recognizes Mike and remarks that he looks "just like that guy on TV" that "guy from the serial killer case". Mike was investigating a missing person when he found Agnes and Chris is, at this point, still a missing person (having only reported his name, where he was and that there was a gun to the police over the phone); therefore the news should not have made the connection between Mike and a serial killer.
