Memories
If all older Shirley movies were this good...
In Kiss and Tell, Shirley plays a mischievous teenager who constantly gets into scrapes with her best friend, Virginia Welles. The boy next door, Jerome Courtland is crazy about her, and she loves teasing him and making him jealous. In the opening scene, Shirley and Virginia are selling guest towels in a booth at a fair for soldiers on leave. Shirley gets the bright idea to sell kisses instead of towels, and their profits skyrocket! The girls' mothers aren't too happy about it, and enforce an estrangement of the two families so their kids start behaving better. But Shirley's brother and Virginia are in love-how are they going to see each other during his leave?
F. Hugh Herbert's script is quick, clever, and hilarious. Everyone does a fantastic job keeping up the pace and delivering quips that keep the audience constantly entertained. It's easy to visualize this comedy in its original Broadway play, and even though the situations are unique to the 1940s, modern audiences will still find it hilarious. If you like snappy comedies, you'll love this one. And if you're of the opinion that Shirley Temple lost her talent with age, rent this movie to change your mind!
One of the more enjoyable Temple teen-ager movies...
Nevertheless, it's one of Shirley's most appealing performances as a teen-ager and she seems to be enjoying herself immensely. She has good support from Jerome Courtland, as an awkward neighborhood boy, and Walter Abel as her exasperated father and Katharine Alexander as his patient wife. I believe Shirley had already played Corliss Archer on radio and certainly had an affinity for this sort of role.
I recall enjoying it much more years ago. A recent viewing of the film left me much less impressed with the overall result. It seemed to be straining a bit hard for laughs and the material was very thin.
Meet Corliss Archer
I thought it was pretty racy for a Production Code movie, but it's based on a stage play that had been produced on Broadway a couple of years earlier. Corliss had been created by F. High Herbert, who turned it into quite a franchise opportunity, with movies, stage shows, the long-running radio show, a television series, and even a comic book; that ran only three issues. Miss Temple would reappear as Corliss in a second movie four years later. With Porter Hall, Darryl Hickman, Carlyle Blackwell Jr, and Daisy the Dog on loan from Blondie.

Corliss Archer: [When Dexter refuses to buy a guest towel from Corliss at a charity bazaar] You claim to love me so much, and then when it comes to putting up a measly dollar for a guest towel, you're not interested.
Dexter Franklin: Well, gee whiz.
Corliss Archer: Oh, it's all right, Dexter. Forget it. And when it comes to taking me out to the movies tonight, I'm not interested.
Dexter Franklin: [reluctantly] OK, give me a towel.
Corliss Archer: [glancing in Dexter's wallet] Dexter, you've got a five-dollar bill in there!
Dexter Franklin: Yeah, it's gonna stay there.
Corliss Archer: Oh, Dexter, you wouldn't want Mildred to sell more than me, would you? Come on, be a sport. It's for the USO!
Dexter Franklin: Okay, give me five.
Corliss Archer: Oh, Dexter! You're really very sweet.
[kisses him]
Dexter Franklin: Wow! Holy cow!
