The "Je chante" song is still popular in France whereas the movie is forgotten.Charles Trénet is,along with Edith Piaf, one of those rare singers of long ago who are still famous even among the young generations.
The song( "Je chante": I sing) provides the movie with its title. The plot is one of the silliest you can think of.It's actually so silly it becomes almost enjoyable.
Charles ' uncle is the headmaster of a chic girls school .He is short of the readies and he has lots and lots of debts.Enter Charles who spends most of his time singing (the title is accurate) and writing songs even when he is at the wheel of his car.He comes to his uncle's rescue: he dismisses the servants after paying their wages ...with royalties from his (future) hits;then the girls are required to do the domestic chores (the parents are told it is part of the national curriculum). And everybody sings ,works ,and whistles like the seven dwarfs did.As it is a musical ,you've got a song every ten minutes.
A (small) love interest : Charles has a crush on one of the boarders ,Denise. But another girl gets jealous...
French cinema at its silliest!
