I have to admit, I am a bit surprised no one has reviewed this yet. Especially considering how well received this was back when it was released. Of course back then you didn't have imdb - so I reckon those who have seen it and have fond memories might not have revisited and not thought about writing what they thought back then.
The main actress tragically took her own life almost a decade ago. She was my first crush as far as I can remember - a friend of mine sort of pressured me into picking someone I was in love with and it was Anna - or Silvia Seidel. Though I am not sure I was aware of her name.
The thing is, that this TV show (and the movie that followed because of its success) made a lot of girls not just happy but also interested in Ballet. I'm not a girl, not sure if that is the reason this never sparked any Ballet interest in me. But I can tell you that this has universal themes that work to this day.
A lot of things may not have aged well (some acting choices that really made me cringe, locations, clothes 80s style and so forth), but the overall feeling and mood still holds up. And while the love story may become a side story at times, it still is powerful enough. And the message is that love will fall wherever it falls - no matter the (physical) appearance. A lovely message - one that is quite romantic to say the least.
Having said all that, the show also has a few themes that work certain times and do not work at all other times. The very first episode and the inciting incident are almost completely ridiculous - but if you cut this some slack and just go with the flow, the charisma of the actors will carry it through.
And when the song plays that rocked my heart back then ... well almost all is lost (in a good sense) ... love is a tango or whatever the title is. I wonder if it lead the charts when it was released. I would not be surprised at all.
