Art of Eight Limbs

This film is a throwback to the gritty, no-nonsense martial arts classics that many of us grew up watching. Remember Ong Bak or any of those old-school martial arts flicks? This movie has that same raw energy and intensity, taking me right back to the glory days of bone-crunching fight scenes and relentless action.

Despite the obvious budget constraints, the filmmakers poured their heart and soul into every punch, kick, and stunt. The choreography is sharp, the action sequences are relentless, and there's a certain charm to the film's unpolished edges. It's clear that they focused on delivering a visceral experience, and it pays off in spades. The dedication to the craft and the passion for the genre shine through, making this a must-watch for anyone who craves that old-school martial arts adrenaline rush.

For many creators, the challenge of combining a MMA story with an international espionage tale is just too exciting to pass up. Which is really unfortunate because the two mix as well as oil and water. This film takes yet another kick at the can. However, to use MMA lingo, that kick is "blocked" by a generally weak story, weak dialog, and weak acting. Compounded by obvious budget restraints and the inability of the editor to keep the final product below a tight 90 minutes. The real reason this film may attract an audience, however, is to see if Ludi Lin has the star power to carry the entire thing on his back, warts and all. If yes, this could really help his career. This movie kinda popped a bit out of nowhere for me as i never heard of it. I checked the trailer and it looked to have some cool fights and im always up for a a Martial Art movie.

The biggest issue with the movie is despite the stakes being high in a "situation point of view" (chemical weapons that could fall in the hands of terrorists), the movie never really seem to emphasis on it and kinda look "cheap" when it comes to the CIA and spy stuff.

That wouldn't really be an issue if the biggest emphasis was on the tournament, the martial arts, and there was emotional engagement. The problem is there is not much.

We are only presented 3 fighters, from France, China and our main character from USA. Add the Muay Thai champion from the compound and that only make it 4 fighters. Not much of a tournament if you ask me.

The movie does pop some fights here and there to pace the rhythm and altough none was bad per say, once again i never really felt the emotional engament or the main character being in true danger.

I understand this movie was probably filmed with a tiny budget on location and they couldn't really afford more expensive CIA stuff and such, but they should had really tweak the script better to really make us the viewers connect with the characters and give us more emotional fights and "badass" attitude from the main character.

Ultimately it "entertained me" enough to be on the positive side of the scale but its one i have no interest to rewatch or buy to add to my collection. I am giving it a 6 out of 10 and if you read this on Letterboxd, it barely get the yellow heart by the skin of its teeth.

The bad reviewers are reviewing this like a Hollywood blockbuster, forget that. This is definitely a "B" Movie and very similar to any of the old Bruce Lee karate films of the early 1970's. Plot here is far better than those others, Great choreography fight scenes, Excellent actors. Ludi Lin plays the main and his stunt skills are great, He would do well in many other movies that deal with fights, karate, and kick boxing. Grace Vorananth is quite the catch and a great fighter as well as gorgeous! Nothing Questionable, no nudity, Lots of fight violence and killing. A fun watch, and the kiddos could see this too. Enjoy!
