It is satisfying and gratifying to me when a female character in an era when women were expected to be submissive shows strength, strategy, and heart. At first the main character, Maud, comes across and haughty and imperious. But soon we find that these are also aspects of her dignity. She is a thinker and does not run off at the mouth whenever her feelings overtake her. I found myself rooting for her throughout and I don't consider what she did at the end monstrous. She was a trapped animal and had to use her wits to get out of a fatal situation.
I particularly love the Victoria style of dress and hair, being quite true to many portraits I have seen from the late 1860's. The mourning dress throughout is very true to that period, as are the sentiments of modesty and propriety.
The villains are all liars and easily bought but it's not just black and white. Some have charm that could be endearing at first. But their insincerity shows up very soon. So it is extremely satisfying to see at least some justice meted out to them for their evil and controlling behavior. Lack of character and cowardice combined with greed and manipulation them up.
This is an artistically created and conceived film of quality. It is exciting and stirs the emotions. An excellent experience that restores my faith that great films are still being made.

I have to say my husband told me about this movie. He said that it was period piece and thought maybe I would like it. Once this movie started I was completely hooked. The cinematography was stunning, music was so beautiful. I was honestly on the edge of my seat the whole time and talking to the screen ha.
The story was perfect and engaging. The actors all did an amazing job. I honestly have never seen any of them before (I don't believe). They were all fantastic in their roles. The main female was so good. I hope to see more stuff from her and the other actors too.
Highly recommend to everyone especially if you love period drama.

This movie was high on my watchlist for a long time but I was so disappointed by it. The trailer made the film seem better than it actually was. Aside from the lead actress (O'Casey) who gave a "good enough" performance, the rest of the actors felt like bad community theatre or poorly produced local TV actors. One particularly bad French accent (and I got the point) really made me cringe.
Moreover, the story wasn't even convincingly good for an hour let alone for 90 minutes. The plot was predictable and the ending was rushed. O'Casey's character is a teenage orphan whose mannerisms and dialogue feel out of place and too modern in a film set sometime in the 1800s. It was a 21st century femenist mindset cosplaying in Victorian Ireland. The costumes were of average quality.
The only bright spot was the use of natural light and countryside scenery. I assume this was filmed in a rural area and the grounds and colour saturation played well into the film's grim premise. Style over substance because the rest of the film lacked quality.
