Swopnodanay

Golam Rabbany Biplob does quite an impressive job as both writer and director. The story is pretty much a folktale fairytale treated with honesty. The execution of 'Swopnodanay' is very simple and while this gives it a more authentic look, it also works against it because the film could have used some polishing. The background music is used to the minimum which works in favour but the sound effect could have been enhanced with more background sound because most of the time it's just too quiet. The sets look realistic enough and the cinematography, especially the long shots, are well done. Biplob is clearly influenced by Ray. The down to earth quality and subtlety does echo Ray even though it doesn't quite reach that level. The fairly good acting is topped by Rokeya Prachi, who plays Fazlu's hopeful wife, followed by Fazlur Rahman Babu as the greedy Siraj. However, all the extras merely function mechanically. 'Swopnodanay' is packed in a solid 84 minutes and in today's day and age, it felt like a refreshing watch. I also liked how the ending took the viewer back to the beginning.
