The parents say they are baffled why their son is estranged. Really? You don't respect his marriage and you are baffled why he is not respecting you? Come on.
It is easy.
He is an adult now, you don't have to like his wife, but you have to respect their marriage if you want a relationship.

I think this is a lesson in futile effort to control people, and the inevitable repercussions of when those people break free. The parents in this family (apparently) had wild ways in their past, and as a result decided to raise their kids in complete isolation. They are homeschooled, only friends are their siblings, restricted in diet, no learning about the "outside" world, vilification of anyone or anything that is not in their ideology, etc. The kids have grown-up with extreme trauma, resentment and anger. To top it off, the kids are also not at all prepared to deal with the real world - both on an emotional/social level, as well as vital skill level in things the average person takes for granted (eg something as simple as searching for something on internet), as well as needing to get their GEDs, etc. The parents either can't see how completely myopic and selfish their judgments and views are for their children, or don't care. If every single one of your children, by the time they are 'coming of age', want nothing to do with you, perhaps you are doing something wrong.
The positives of this show, is it shows the resilience of the human spirit, and what a gift it is to find and express your true self - and what a gift it is to be able to do that. I'm glad this show has given the older kids the means to build their own lives.

A pair of parents who shield their children from the reality of humanity suddenly agree to film a TV series? This is completely fake. Despite the children of these parents being extremely interesting, the parents abhorrent and entirely disillusioned, for a fake "reality" series it does become interesting. But fake it is. These parents, were they real, would have never agreed to this. And if they did I would love the producer to explain to me the process of how they got them to sign the contract. I won't hold my breath on that one, but I will continue to watch.

Besides the fact that the parents want to "shelter" their kids...but they don't mind letting them on a reality show...besides that... it's a cute, funny show... but it's also hard to believe that this family doesn't have any skeletons...they all do!!!

Just like most other reality shows. Fake and scripted to add drama for people to watch it. If this family truly grew up with no TV, how are they now on TV. Move on, nothing to see here. How are all these families and fake people getting their own shows. I can be fake, give me a show.

We don't let our children watch tv but we welcome a tv crew in our lives. But the worse is how the parents make it seem it's all about protecting the younger kids from their older siblings bad influences that is why they can't be alone with them. It's not. It's all about control. The mother has a serious control problem and since the kids have grown up and she lost control she is using the younger kids to still have some control over the older kids. They should be proud that they raised them like they did but now it's time for them to leave the nest and trust/support them as they navigate life.

Self-centered narcissistic parents without the insight to allow their children to grow without projecting their own flaws onto them to the extent that the result is that the kids are socially dysfunctional. It is the epitome of selfishness.

It is interesting to watch as a conservative faith-based family deals with life. If I had to come up with a slogan for the show, it would be Mr Rogers Meets The Waltons.
I am 70, so over the decades I have seen the world change and also have seen my share of reality shows. The first reality show was PBS's An American Family, which followed a family as they traversed life. Just as taking the temperature of an object changes the temperature of that object, a reality TV show changes the lives of the participants. Being in front of a camera can effect how people interact and I am sure that also has happened to this family.
Without giving any spoilers, we soon learn why the Mother is overly protective of her children. As the shows progress I just want Dr. Phil to come in and explain to them why things are like they are. "How's that working for you?" would be one of the best questions to ask the family as they learn why there is turmoil.
Parents are supposed to teach and guide their children to deal with life. It seems as though the parents are holding them back. One has to wonder that if a tragedy took the parents lives, how would these children handle being thrust into the world away from the comfort of their current situation at home? You have to wonder as one child has never had a soda until age 20. Imagine the children not having Internet access unless hovered over or being able to watch television.
Yes, you can try to protect your children from every possible perceived evil in the world, but at what cost?
This series is an interesting study in family relationships.

Being from an small European country, some things are foreign to me.
Homeschooling is non existent here - even kids from rural environments - like farms easily cycle 8 miles to school, or are collected by bus when they're smaller. Covid lockdowns did put a lot of stress to household's sanity over here.
We've got our Bible Belt with categoral schools, but those are also present in the big cities. I think that the possibility of keeping your kids away form the modern world is hardly existant here.
I feel for Ethan; he he's a good soul, but rather childish, which doesn't help much being tied to two headstrong women. The other elder children will find their way more sealy eventually I guess.
What I'm surprised about is the fact that the eldest daughter is never mentioned, except for once when the mother wanted to set up facetime or a conference call to her because she was expecting.
I get it that she isn't part of the show, but that noone ever drops her name seems strange/illogical to me.
I'm at S3E05 now and curious what will happen next.

This is the most unrealistic show I've watched. If those kids have never seen TV or allowed on the internet then why is their hair and makeup beyond perfection. Fake TV is all I have to say.

Kim is a hypocrite, a jail guard, control freak, selfish & everything that a mother shouldn't be! Can't stand her!
She has created her own circus, & uses her kids as her captive animals to do the acts by forcing them, the way they control loins & elephants by whips! She really needs to be charged with child abuse by keeping her kids captive, away from life, people, news, school, friends, sports, vacations & everything what life is all about & has to offer, bad or good!
These kids are blinded & deafened to everything that exits! Her act is nothing short of kidnapping & locking them away in her cult, jail, circus or whatever you can call it! She, in my eyes, is nothing but a criminal! I can't stand her! Poor her beautiful kids in captivity!

I am going to defend Kim and congratulate her on her awesome parenting job. All her children are beautiful,,talented polite and respectful. How many mothers could home school so many children after such a horrible tragedy of accidently running over her own baby??? They would have to lock me up and throw away the key period!!! Anyone criticizing her must have never raised one child!!!
The kids had a beautiful home and two parents that loved them and did their best for them. They weren't perfect who is?
But the proof is in the pudding. All the children are thriving. And will go on to live lovely lives.
They need to start appreciating all the good the parents did do for them and stop downing their poor unappreciated parents and honor and forgive them. Then they need to walk a mile in their shoes for one day and see how much they complain then !!!!

My heart breaks for these kids dude. I can't even look at the dads patronizing face without wanting to puke. Watched one episode and decided never again. The parents are delusional and total ***holes. Skip this, you'll thank me later.

This EX wife is on HIS show, she knows he's heartbroken and drags some simpleton to take his place, I never in my life seen a more controlling nutcase in my life, there was nothing he could do to make her happy. I think Ethan is so much better off with out that camera hog, Please can that fake phony bonky nose I can't look at her and I'm tired of skipping the way too much screen time she's allowed, I love the lil girls and Barry is the nicest of guys, Kims getting fatter and fatter she must lower those skirts they do her no justice nothing harder to look at than cottage cheese legs, and her boyfriend? OMG he's just special, any dude that has an affair with a married women with 9 kids with lil ones at home is a pretty big scumbag to me, and why does she keep saying I wish whats his face was here,, fatty listen NO ONE wants him or his wonky eye on screen, where his parents brother and sister, that's what he looks like.

This show centers around the conflicts, religious and otherwise, impacting the Plath family of Cairo Georgia. The zealous parents raised their many offspring in a rigid, Christian environment, ie no television, movies, only home schooling, limited friendships., family values, Bible study, and no talk of sex. Some of the older children have broken away from the mold, though keep themselves within striking distance of mommy and daddy. The oldest son, the often sour and conflicted Ethan, however, has made a complete break, due to the way he feels his parents mistreated his wife, Olivia (by far my favorite of the bunch). One son, Micah, flees to LaLa land in hopes of landing a modeling career( thank you TLC). It seems he loafs there more than he works. The oldest daughter, Moriah, is embarking on a singing career (thank you again TLC). She too has broken away from the Christian mold, but not totally. Momma Henry is having a midlife crisis that may be threatening her long marriage to Barry, her henpecked husband. This show is moderately entertaining, at times, but again, Olivia gives it the steam it needs. A professional photographer, she covered a gay wedding which was unexpected but another indication of how independent she is from the strict religious crowd that surrounds her. Bravo to her for that! All in all, I enjoy watching 'WTP', but could live without the sickening California subplot.

Please? Can we stop glorifying extremism in our society? The real evil isn't being Christian or atheist or black or white the real evil we are facing right now is being EXTREME in whatever your beliefs, and this is nothing more than more pandering and glorification of religious extremists. Stop, already.

I think it was utterly distasteful when I watched Moriah who was having a stage performance and I know she wanted her parents there, but yet Olivia made her choose her and her parents. She was dead wrong for trying to put a wedge between both Moriah and Micah and their parents. Now she's telling Ethan she needs a safe space so she doesn't want Micah visiting Ethan in their home. She's acting like Micah is some aggressive killer. WTH! It's just not right I
hope Ethan can see her controlling and manipulative ways. He can pray to God for wisdom. It's really sad to see someone try to come bet. Fam.

TLC has the most deplorable and immoral reality shows on TV. These shows have nothing interesting and the characters cannot act. Totally scripted and fake.

The sons are very awkward, and the girls except for Moriah are too much like little house on the Prarie. The parents raised their kids to be so naive. They should be ashamed. It's very close to cultists. I wonder if anybody ever called DCFS on them for mental and emotional abuse?

First get past the fact that the show is a complete contradiction; meaning that the parents claim to keep their children sheltered from exposure to TV, radio, the real world, cell phones, sugar and more, yet they are in a reality TV show. Then look past the fact that the older daughters of this so-called extremely conservative family are allowed to drown themselves in makeup, gaudy jewelry and horrendous nail polish. After you get past all that the kids are cute. And it's refreshing to hear teenagers speak without saying "like" between each word. And although the older kids are itching to stake their independence The angst is at a minimum. It's nice to see kids get along with each other and with their parents. There's no yelling, bickering or fighting. It's actually a sweet show.

Now that Olivia has gone her own way she should be removed from the show. No one cares what she is doing now. She didn't try with any of the family . Focus on the children in the family because they have great stories to tell. I especially like Ethan as he seems so kind and innocent. The older children are finding theirselves and creating super lives. Now that they have gotten out in the world they seem to be kind and interesting people. Keep the show going as it is fun to watch. Please get rid of Olivia as from the start she seemed to be a mistake. In my opinion I'm not interested in her as her attitude is so nonchalant.
