Released on the dutch public free-to-air network, I just completed the first 4 episodes of this miniseries. And I have to admit that I can't wait for the remaining episodes to be released! So if you have an interest in watching movies or mini-series about the second world war (WW2), I really suggest that you consider watching this mini-series.
Taking a look at the expanding list of already existing WW2 drama that has been produced in the Netherlands, this new mini-series is an excellent fit! I think this mini series really deserves a spot amongst movies like e.g. "The Forgotten Battle", "Black Book", "Riphagen", or "The Resistance Banker"...
Fitting mainly in the genre of 'war drama', this mini-series also takes the viewer back to the 1960's, i.e. Over a decade after WW2 ended. It not only shows the struggles of a Waffen-SS soldier/officer in his daily life, but also on the often forgotten effects it has on his children. Especially in those years just after WW2 ended - with all inhumane attrocities still fresh in peoples minds - this mini-series shows how a son learns and reacts on his fathers wartime experiences in the Waffen-SS.
Knowing that this mini-series is based on true events, I was most shocked to learn that the Waffen-SS officer was also a witness to the atrocities committed by the German "Einsatzgruppen". It is these specialized 'murder squads' from the SS that - together with the concentration camps - are responsible for the genocide that the Nazi's committed. That these experiences must have had a detrimal effect on the way he functioned as a father, must be clear. So I am very interested in how all will unfold further in the coming episodes.
The scenery, clothing, props, buildings and vehicles seem to be all period unique and gave me a 'true to life'-experience of how it must have been like during the 1940's and 1960's. Combined with good acting and an interesting storyline, it is the overall excellent mix that keeps me gripped for 4 episodes.
I think that when all episodes will be released, this mini-series is a great candidate for a binge-watch. In my opinion, this mini-series is also a good candidate for international release on a platform like e.g. Disney+, Netflix or HBO+. For such a roll-out, I think that the current title of "Legacy" may be not optimal. Why?! Because I do not think that the current title is powerful enough... "Legacy" just doesn't cover the load.
If I were to compare this min-series to other content that is being produced in The Netherlands, I could easily give this mini-series the highest score possible. I however think that it is more justified to score it in direct competition with other internationally available content. Based on the latter, I think that a score of 7.1/10 is justified. Rounded to an IMDb rating of 7 stars, this is a pretty good score for a production coming from The Netherlands. This of course based on having seen 4 episodes.
