The Phoenix Lights (2005)
Celebrating the historic and still unexplained Arizona mass sighting of 1997 this critically acclaimed and internationally award winning Documentary is based on the bestselling book, "The Phoenix Lights...A Skeptic's Discovery That We Are Not Alone". Over 30 credible eyewitnesses, children, scientists, military, pilots and experts give compelling testimony to the reality of these mysterious global visitations, including former AZ Gov. Fife Symington who discloses that he witnessed the event and it wasn't military! Astronaut and moon walker Dr. Edgar Mitchell, Sc.D. confirms that these phenomena are real! A Commercial & Vietnam pilot witnessed the silent, mile wide craft glide above his head. A Veteran 911 Phoenix Police operator tells all about that fateful night. NASA footage confirms that these phenomena are here. UFO buffs call it the most documented and important mass sighting ever recorded. But still today, the military and government can only offer questionable explanations as to what the anomalous lights truly were. In over 11 years, the strange phenomena have never been duplicated or re-enacted [although the military tried fruitlessly, three years later]. Many experts and witnesses insist that what appeared in the Arizona skies was something beyond this world. But there is much more to the story! What were they? How did they affect the witnesses? What do they mean?

Interesting for awhile ...but less would have been best

The March 13, 1997, Phoenix lights event plus a couple similar sightings are relentlessly trumpeted as an extra-terrestrial visitation. Unfortunately, other than the word of eyewitnesses that they saw something in the sky, there is zero evidence to support such a fantastic claim as visitors from outer space. This would have made a superior segment on The History Channel's "U.F.O. Hunters", but is not acceptable as a feature, simply because there is not enough material. The interviews especially wear thin, becoming more and more redundant. "The Phoenix Lights" will probably leave most viewers thinking less would have been best. - MERK

Informative & entertaining expose of the inexplicable Phoenix Lights

It is both puzzling and disconcerting that some ridicule this valiant grass-roots attempt to inform the public of one, if not the most documented and important UFO sighting incidents in modern history. This film not only incorporates compelling and consistent witness reports, photo evidence (authenticated by Scientific analysis), while highlighting the 1997 AZ mass event, but it goes a step further to give the viewer a glimpse into what the UFO topic is all about. The film covers the History, strong Media bias, impact to the witness, as well as the significant message experiencers receive during anomalous events. People from all walks of life, including Astronauts, military, law enforcement, Hospice workers, artists, health professionals, etc. verify the validity of these cryptic visitations. The bottom line is that this film is the ONLY Feature confirming that something extra-ordinary appeared in the skies of AZ and it wasn't just on March 13, 1997. The sightings of strange objects were reported for centuries before, during and after the statewide "parade", as the film adeptly imparts. Note that this cinema project is appropriate for family viewing.

    Not a true documentary, but...

A documentary provides more than a one sided perspective. This film does not. Poor direction and too much of the same ole same ole. The redundancy made this film less compelling. What a shame.

In the trivia section here, I read it received best documentary and best director awards- from WHO? The Girl Scout? Anyone can give awards- just like little leaguers. Maybe that comment was written by the directors, who knows!

That being said, I can't imagine we are the only beings in the universe. I don't know what everyone saw, but over 10,000 people did see something. I do agree that we need to be more open minded and stop fighting with each other. Z3

    Very intelligent analysis

This is one of the best documentaries ever produced on the subject. And they finally take it to the next level, meaning that they are compelling us to consider the real implications of contact with intelligent life from another world, and encouraging us to consider our place in the cosmos, and the fact that we are part of a larger community. Everyone should watch this and regain a sense of awe and wonder at the incredible potential awaiting us. We must grow up as a race and turn our gaze outward AND inward.

    Entertainment Only

Watch this for entertainment value only. This is by no measure a documentary featuring any significant critical thought on this subject. It's basically a continuous stream of "Gee I saw sumthin'in the sky!" testimonials which, as an earlier reviewer noted, becomes very tedious after 30-40 minutes.

I have no doubt that thousands of people "saw sumpthin'" unusual in the night skies over Phoenix in March of 1997. But this "documentary" trades purely in the most outlandish and exotic explanations (i.e. visitors from another planet) for that spectacle.

So if you're the type of person who enjoys such meta-science documentaries you'll probably enjoy this film. But if yours is a more critical mind don't waste 90 minutes on it. You wont be either (a) better informed, or (b) convinced by the thesis.

There was only one officially logged aviation report filed during the event. Actor Kurt Russell was the civilian pilot who, upon approach to Sky Harbor airport, witnessed the six lights in a v-shaped formation and, concerned, contacted the airport control tower. He filed the incident with tower officials. According to Russell, his own logbook contains the report. Many years later he would recall the event while watching a documentary about the event...
