My first thought when I started watching this was... Geez, this is bad.
I wasn't so sure I'd stick with it. The acting was subpar, and the characters weren't very interesting.
But once dashing love interest, Sebastian (Mark Macdonald), comes on the scene, things pick up.
The story revolves around a for hire private detective named Crunch (who is played by 3 different actors during the movie, cleverly plot-driven by having him involved in accidents that necessitate facial reconstruction), looking for work, and for Sebastian's missing dog.
In the course of the movie, we're introduced to a hidden treasure whose location is cleverly hidden inside a painting that's been stolen from the local museum, a gang of thieves trying to get possession of the painting (and treasure), an Aztec mummy, and a growing hoard of flesh-eating zombies. For starters. I won't go into all the various twists, turns and utterly eccentric characters, extraordinary and ludicrous scenes that emerge in this film.
The fact that many actors in this film have few, if any film credits, and only one has a photo in the IMDB cast list might be a tip off that acting is probably not their primary profession. Yet, they give commendable performances in the context of the movie.
If you've ever seen films from Troma Entertainment, you have a pretty good idea of what to expect here. The film is brimming with crude humor, unexpected plot twists, comical gore, and 'budget-conscious' special effects.
But in fact, the special effects are terrific. From zombies being beheaded or bisected with a machete along their sagittal plane to a mysterious beer can that hits movie theatre owner, Fast Buck, in the head (hint: The theatre is allegedly haunted), amazing fight scenes, a deadly hula hoop, the hero being flung off a balcony, to looking through a telescope embedded in one zombie's eye socket from the vantage point of the missing back of his head. Can't beat the fast paced and imaginative creativity of this film.
The skillful cinematography makes the fight scenes dynamic and very exciting to watch.
Clearly the film is low budget, but they do a lot with what they have. It's entertaining, if a little bizarre.
Gay themed, though there are quite a few bare breasts to be seen, and there's also some strong language thrown in for good measure.
It's a FUN movie. Don't expect Star Wars or Bruce Lee, and you will probably enjoy some good laughs.
