The church in the film was told the film was about a "woman's anguish over bringing a child into a world facing eco collapse." They now have a policy of verifying message and content of any film production wanting to use their location. Inverness school principal Beth Nolan says that the film director and producer was less than truthful - they were told the film was about the challenges of teaching during Covid.
Producer Jason Blum saw the film and stated that the film made him uncomfortable and was on the edge of his seat and hadn't stopped thinking about the film since he watched it. His company Blumhouse Productions ended up acquiring the film.
Beth de Araújo first pitched the idea to Stefanie Estes, her roommate during COVID-19 lockdown, and wrote the part of Emily specifically for Estes.
