Ken Russell: A Bit of a Devil

This film is a retrospective of Russell's life and work, released by the BBC shortly after he passed away. It's narrated by Alan Yentob.

Through interviews with his friends and collaborators, they begin by discussing his work from the 70's, relating it to his previous career as a still photographer- noting it's where he gained his sense of composition.

They continue by discussing the influence that classical music had on him as a child. Something which would clearly be reflected in many of his later works- especially the films he made for the television program "Monitor".

He apparently started to experiment with film in the 50's, with one of his shorts gaining him some notoriety and recognition. Which is what led to his contract with the BBC. He used this oppourtunity to explore his creative visual ideas.

A number of commentators look at Russell's early films, discussing how these early influences were the driving forces behind his style. One interesting note, they mention, is that Elgar is almost semi-autobiographical.

They end off by looking at Russell's trifecta of hits...the only time that one director had 3 hit films playing in theatres simultaneously. And a short glimpse into his later works.

A super interesting look at one of Britain's most visionary, controversial and talented directors. May he RIP.
