Lloyd Cole and the Commotions: From the Hip

Of the few Lloyd Cole and the Commotions' music videos they ever did, "From the Hip" might be my personal favorite, not just because of the amazing melancholic song but also the visuals, cinematography and small backstory which looks quite different than their other videos out there which consists of band performance. Sure, there's Lloyd and the drummer performing the song (some small bits with the guitar player, by that time the band was completely torn apart, just making their final gigs and videos for their last album "Mainstream"), but what makes it somewhat different is some cutaways to a lonely woman having a quiet time of herself whether staying in some room, listening to a record player or inside of a car going nowhere.

If we consider the sadness of the lyrics which deals with violence and abused of which the poet can only escape by saying he doesn't care anymore, we can sort of project such notions happening with the girl hence we do have some small story going on which wasn't typical in Cole's videos. The rhythm, the melody and the man's voice conquers you very easily and it's quite a pity it didn't became a hit like "Jennifer She Said" (from same album) or "Rattlesnakes" (their very first hit, possibly their biggest). There's a lot more to be said about this particular but I'll leave you with just those thoughts. See it for yourself and enjoy it. 8/10.
