Director Anthony Squire's playful Saturday matinee about the jocular misadventures of the mythologically mischievous 'Mr. Selkie'(1979)remains one of the more irrepressibly charming examples of the Children's Film Foundation's consistently delightful, effortlessly mood-lifting oeuvre. With the amusingly energized Peter Bayliss making for an exceptionally enlightened, ecologically sound seal! I found this to be 52 warmly fuzzy minutes of nostalgic CFF bliss! Amenable performances abound, and the exquisitely beautiful Devon coastline adding much to the film's untainted charm, with John Gale's sprightly score being another breezy highlight! With national treasure Molly Weir certainly being no less appealing as kindly, level-headed Grannie Ross! Cult film fans might also care to note that one of the 'meddling kids' Eileen Ross was endearingly played by sweetly pretty Samantha Weysom who would later star in future midnight movie classic 'Superman IV: Quest For Peace'. Perhaps, the only negative aspect being the film's all too valid environmental concerns over the deleterious effects of unchecked sea pollution having been largely unheeded. 'Mr. Selkie' remains a appetizingly fishy treat for vintage film fanatics of all ages and certainly merits my seal of approval!
