I had the privilege of previewing Samyukta Vijayan's thought-provoking film, Blue Sunshine. This Tamil feature film of about 90 mins duration delves into the intricate world of gender identity, expertly weaving a narrative that challenges societal norms.
The film follows Arvind, a private school teacher, as he transitions into Bhanu, a young woman, navigating the complexities of self-discovery. Through Bhanu's journey, Samyukta a trans female herself, sheds light on pressing issues surrounding gender and sexuality. This film is not autobiographical & I was impressed by her bold conviction to make this film for the sake of others, who may not be as lucky as she is, in her gender identity and transition, that was well supported. Lovely choice of film's title too, since it has its own eloquence interns of the metaphor.
Each character in the film serves a purpose, conveying the director's message about societal expectations and acceptance. What struck me most was the film's ability to humanize characters as victims of the ecosystems they are exposed to, though they sometimes seem stereotypical. Samyukta tries neatly to break those barriers and make it a safer happier place for all. I am sure it will touch a lot of hearts & minds.
One scene stole my heart: the poignant conversation between Bhanu and her infertile female cousin emoted perfectly by Semmalar Annam. Amongst other things like her husband appreciating Bhanu in front of his own wife, the pleas by Annam's character, especially the last question 'if Bhanu will be able to beget a child' was poignant. Bhanu just shakes her head in silence and there again was a fabulous actor playing the protagonist - the director Samyukta herself. This brief, yet powerful exchange encapsulates one of the film's strong points for me. The uncertainty of LGBTQ+ life's existence and the need of accepting others in our life without judgment.
Blue Sunshine urges us to question our rigid perspectives and confront the unknown. As we navigate life's mysteries, science, spirituality, and philosophy, we're reminded that empathy and understanding are essential. This life is too short to be spent otherwise.
Samyukta's direction masterfully balances sensitivity and conviction, making Blue Sunshine a needed watch. This film isn't just about gender identity; it's about embracing our shared humanity.

It's really good movie.... I just started to watch the movie because of break time of Masters cricket match but I missed the second innings of the match the film was the reason...the screen play was on track good line length core subject. The acting and the story line was very realistic and perfectly crafted well performed samyuktha vijayan The direction is more than perfect for a debutant. It is must watch. There is so much in the movie that requires the mandatory attention of the society. Clearly shown the feeling of pain inside them . The father and mother charector also done good acting...there many persons in our society like the PT master (male) (worst) charector...very less persons we have like PT master (female) charector.....all should watch this movie....
Just today watched...neela nira sooriyan directed by samyuktha mam...she herself potrayed the lead role & showcased the reality hard hitting facts of MTF transition...every charecters were written deeply & close to reality makes us to believe the world so easy...overall the must watch movie in this time special mention to actors masanth & harini for their neat performances too...They too literally delivered the charecters very truthful. Cinematography is too good for this flim...with some aesthetic & dark frames apr for the movie..Thank you director mam for delivering this much needed movie in this Era..
Great job, team! This is a movie that everyone should watch to gain awareness about the LGBTQ+ community.
These topics are not typically taught in schools, and previous generations didn't have an education system that encouraged acceptance of these changes. However, it's time to face reality, stay supportive of those around us, and give them the respect they deserve in this world.
It's an excellent film, ofiering more than what textbooks can provide, especially for those who may not have anyone in their family to learn from. I really appreciate how the film portrays the truth and highlights the ongoing struggles faced by many in today's world.

The Plot is very good and need of the hour. It clearly shows the hurdles faced by those who feel opposite gender and want to change.
But the problem with the movie is showing Samyukta as she's in constant depression all the time. No one can be depressed 24/7, Human brain is not built like that.
If you watched Naan Kadavul where the differently abled kids who face physical and mental torture find some joy with their friends and live their life.
Here she don't have any such situation, she's mentally being forced by parents/relatives, physically changing to girl. But that is not unbearable. There is not a single scene she finds any joy in life.
Also this creates many confusions to audience. She has courage to undergo for surgery but don't have courage to face others like his father, PT sir, school staff. The doctor agreed to give certificate if she experience as girl, But she didn't get that?
She is educated and go to Govt office applying for gender change affidavit? For those who undergo surgery to woman should get their gender changed to Female or Transgender in the certificate?
If she is bold then it should be shown everywhere. But she is having selective courage. Could've been taken more realistic and impactful.
