One of the truths anyone who ever served ought to know is the United States Marine Corps is an all-volunteer force. The Black men who were among the first to serve in the Corps had grandparents and great-grandparents who had personal recollections of what it was like to be slaves, and they were volunteering to join a service with a commandant who actively did not want Black Marines to exist.

However, the story doesn't just focus on racism. Instead, the film sticks to the desire to serve one's nation, the rigors of military indoctrination, and the personal benefits military service provides to the character of veterans.

This is a well-told story which adds to the beauty and complexity of American history.
