AI Jetée

To take one of the most human works of short fiction and run it through generative Al is a truly distasteful exercise. Chris Marker used still photography (and one shot of movement) to tell an arresting story of both the fantastical and the grounded. This 'director' typed some prompts, forced a server farm to spin up climate-changing energy, then spliced the excreted video files in sequence.

According to IMDb, this film won an award for experimental film. I understand how it qualifies as an experiment in AI image generation, but I fail to see how this short is experimenting with the medium of film itself.

It'd be one thing to recreate a famous short film with dogs, or lego, or something of that ilk. Those would require planning, creative choices, and would put some kind of unique spin on the source material. But forcing midjourney to make an off-puttimg facsimile doesn't *say* anything. Other than "i want genAI to do the work for me".

In my opinion, this creatively bankrupt tech demo is worth skipping for the real thing.
