Pauline Black: A 2-Tone Story

I saw a screening last night with the affable Ms. Black doing the QA. Even though the tagline mentions "racism" and "sexism," the buzzwords du jour, there was no agenda, no stridency or preaching. The movie is far more complex, about a woman who did not quite fit in, until she found her identity in her music.

The music business is brutal enough regardless of who you are, but Ms. Black held no bitterness as to the way she was treated, merely sardonic observations. The interviews, with Jool Holland, etc. Were upbeat and engaging, especially those with her late Selecter bandmate, "Gabs," The film also had an astonishing double-twist ending, coming completely out of of left, a bit of detective work by Ms. Black that explained a bit about who who she is.
