Avis à la une
I replay enjoyed this movie, it reminds me of Adam Sandler movies. It was really funny to watch with my family. I will give it a month and rewatch. Critics commended the film's humor, scenic South African setting, and the chemistry among the cast. The story, while simple, resonates with families, offering both laughs and touching moments. It's been described as perfect for a cozy family movie night, balancing comedy with meaningful messages . Disaster Holiday (2024), directed by Rethabile Ramaphakela, is a family comedy that premiered on December 13, 2024, on Netflix. The film follows a workaholic father who attempts to bond with his kids by disguising a work trip to Durban as a family road trip. Chaos ensues as the dual-purpose vacation tests his ability to balance personal and professional commitments.
This is a thoroughly enjoyable family film. Think National Lampoon, RV or any Adam Sandler film.
Set in South Africa and whilst mostly English it does showcase both Zulu and Xhosa. It's nice to see films produced in different countries featured on a mainstream streaming platform.
Some great one liners and genuinely funny laugh out loud moments following a family on a disastrous road trip instead of a luxury holiday in Zanzibar. The lead actor is brilliant and the supporting cast are great.
Tackles step parent issues and co parenting in a light hearted manner. Definitely give it a go for family movie night!

Cliché or not, this family movie is better than the current score 4.8 suggests.
I was expecting a B-roll, and had a slight prejudice, noticing the South African elements of it, wondering if this was yet another Nollywood production.
It took a moment to get into its paces, but I´m glad to have given time to what turned out to be a wholesome journey in more ways than one.
As for clichés, which father does not recognise the irony of a struggling father trying to balance the relationhip paradox of doing your utmost in not only providing - but being present in the chaotics of family life?
Suitable for all ages.

The ratings don't do it much justice go watch it yourself it's really enjoyable and laughs all the way loved it 🙌I apparently have to write a paragraph so here we go . It's those cliche holiday films kind of like Vacation 2015 starring Ed Helms. If you enjoyed that you'd definitely enjoy this without a doubt. Such an amazing African film one of the best I've ever watched but to be fair I haven't watched a lot of African movies. The writing was amazing pretty good acting from and definitely funny. If you're looking to have a nice laugh with family this is the film for you. Definitely worth watching.
It makes me happy to see movies from other countries not only make movies and have them distributed in a place people like me can find them, but also that they don't just make pertinent social dramas and avant-garde stuff but glossy fluff like this.
I've begin several South African movies lately and sort of forgotten to finish them but this holds the attention well enough.
There is a bombastic, paint by numbers charm in this familiar formula of a father trying to balance to the pressures of capitalism with the pressures of patriarchy i.e., in trying to actually be close to his disenfranchised family.
A lot of it is that predictable humor where someone ignores blatantly good advice and pays the price. I suppose we're supposed to be fine with it because they sort of deserve it but I've seen so much of this anyway.
I like how they switch between English and Zulu diglossically and how his new wife speaks sometimes in Xhosa. Sometimes they use an Afrikaans phrase if the subtitles are to be believed.
This movie will do little to surprise you except in how oddly watchable it is.

- GaffesThe road between Johannesburg is a freeway or 4 lane dual carriageway throughout its length unlike the narrow winding roads depicted in the movie. The drive between Johannesburg and Durban usually takes between 5 and 6 hours.
