As a boxing fan you're only ever given what the media or ppv provider allow you to see. In modern times, social media as well. Mr Calzaghe gives an insight into the real hours that go into putting on a masterpiece of a boxing show. The grit, the doubt, the love and sacrifice by both boxer, trainer and family member. Seeing fights that I grew up on and that I anticipated and couldn't wait for, so many years later almost as a fly on the wall (or rope) shows you what boxing was and just how great these 2 were. These social media times we are living in almost casts a shadow over what fighters used to do, which was to fight each without any 'BS' to see who was the best. A must watch for any boxing fan of any age. Either to reminisce or to watch one of the greatest fighters in boxing history and the great Enzo Calzaghe that guided him and saw what nobody else could.
This documentary film will stand the test of time and should be reference point for any young athlete in what ever sport they represent. An extraordinary piece of film making that took you to the heart of an incredible man, why he succeeded and to the people around him and the critical roles they played. The greatest boxer Wales and Great Britain has ever produced.
What makes the story fascinating is the relationship between Joe and his Sardinian-born father, Enzo, who became his trainer. Torn between daring and caring, protecting his son and throwing him to the wolves in the ring, Enzo manages to be two people at once, and his past as a rock musician becomes part of Calzaghe's technique - the long verse of jabs and then a nonstop flurry of fast blows as the chorus.
I got the Blu-ray for Christmas.
If you are a fan of boxing or Calzaghe you should watch this. No debate about that. Boxing is not the same anymore.
That said there is nothing really surprising about this documentary.
It focuses a lot on the father/son relationship. You see Enzo talking about how he gave up his music and became a trainer.
We see clips of a young Calzaghe in his amateur days. And we see clips of the most meaningful fights of his career and Joe talks a little about each fight. A few buildup clips are shown too (God, I hate that Hopkins guy).
It felt like it could have been longer. It felt slightly rushed. It should have shown more buildup and post fight interviews. It was mentioned that the no-loss record was a psychological problem for Joe. The stress of keeping the 0. But nothing from Joe's own mouth. We did not get enough of his inner thoughts. Who is Joe Calzaghe as a person?
Oh those little cute kids of his? Not so little anymore. Time flies...
The extras was fun for me as a Dane because it features Mikkel Kessler. They show a lengthy clip of Joe and Mikkel watching and commenting their fight and playing ping pong. That was good fun. I think it is great that you can fight professionally and still be friends. No need for this Hopkins gangster s... Damn, Kessler looked like Ivan Drago in their fight.
Time to end this review. Final verdict. You gotta have it! You know you do!

What a wonderful docu-movie this is. It has it all, a marvelous story, excellent directorship, powerful editing and a score you will love. I so enjoyed this and would heartily recommended it to all, boxing fan or not. It may be too simplistic but this movie is to boxing what Senna was to motor racing, the sport is secondary it is first and foremost a human story and what a story it is!
Surprisingly the "real" star of the story is possibly not even Joe Calzaghe but his Dad, Enzo. How someone with no boxing pedigree can bring his son to the pinnacle of sporting stardom is truly a joy to watch!
Enjoy, I am sure you will feel better having watched Mr Calzaghe than you did when you sat down to watch it.
