People calling it stereotypical are wrong. I'm a mid 30s Indian born and raised out of India, and live in a multi-generational family and this movie made me laugh out loud at many moments and cry out of sentiment. The themes in this movie absolutely reflect the Indian cultural themes of my life and it's a heartwarming, relatable and realistic movie with a solid message. Hilarious and well-made and special hats off to Shanthi, an excellent depiction of a loving yet overbearing Indian mother 😊
I turned this off in the first few minutes. And so my review is only reflective of the impression I got through these first few minutes but I expect they set the scene for and endure through the rest of the show.
The first few minutes were filled with swearing and sexual language in mostly English spoken in an American accent by a quintessential brown Indian boy who is named Ray.
When we turn to watch an Indian series, we expect it to have some "Indianness about it". For me, I turn to watch a new Indian series when I want something that reflects the modern climate we live in but that shares with me what India contains by its very existence: some heart, warmth, humility, values.
The show came across to me as completely Americanised, the swearing, the sex filled thoughts and then suddenly Ray being left alone at the end. If I wanted to watch something that feels like an American high school drama, I would. But I turned to an Indian series because I wanted that Indian feel and it seems that we can't even trust Indian cinema to give us that anymore, unless I am completely out of touch with what India is now.
