  • The only time I've hated Zendaya

This movie was produced by Amy Pascal, producer of Ghostbusters (2016) and producer of the Venom movies, so you know what you'll get quality-wise.

More importantly, another producer of this film was Zendaya, and I'll tell you a bit about why I find that insulting:

I consider myself a Zendaya fan. I particularly watched this movie because Zendaya was on it. I initially skipped it because, in the poster, I thought that was Jennifer Lopez wearing glasses, and as a Latino I consider Lopez to be one of the most Meh celebrities ever.

However, when I found out that that was Zendaya in the poster, I decided to check the movie out. But here, Zendaya is constantly being addressed as the "hottest woman there is" and such comments like that. Which, of course, No. Just. No. Not even Zendaya fans think that. In a world with Rebecca Ferguson, Katheryn Winnick, Alexandra Daddario, Scarlet Johanson, Gal Gadot, Sydney Sweeney, etc. That is not even close.

So not only was this beauty thing constantly immersion breaking. But Zendaya's character is also considered to be an incredibly good tennis player. And when you look at her wiry physique, your mind just screams, again, No. You just have to look at the body of her rival, Anna Mueller, who is played by a real life tennis player. Look at her arms and her thighs, how thick they are. You need body mass like that to be able to produce that kind of explosive power. Hell, look at the Williams sisters in their peak.

So Zendaya produced a movie where she is the hottest woman on the planet (No), and also the most promising young female tennis player in the US (Her body wouldn't be able to even have a decent serve). Also, by the way, I was just watching a Youtube vid called "Hollywood ego is ruining Hollywood." Coincidence? I think not.

So Zendaya gave the film all of these immersion breaking moments. Added to that, Art Donaldson, her husband, is emotionally destroyed because Zendaya treats him like crap. But then you look at Donaldson's face, and he's incredibly handsome. He also has an impressive body for a celebrity who is not on steroids like Marvel actors are. Moreover, he is a tennis player who used to be successful, so in the 13 years of marriage to Zendaya, he must have had to run into way more beautiful women who didn't treat him like trash. But according to this movie, we're supposed to believe he couldn't just find himself someone who respected him as a man... Right.

On another note, this movie, as stated in the teaser, is about a love triangle. All love triangles are toxic, of course. In that regard, for example, I hated Vicky, Cristina, Barcelona, but even that movie looks like a tame little kitten compared to this. This movie will make you go "ew" and "ugh" a few times.

In spite of that, the script has this incredibly well-paced tension building, escalating while deepening our understanding of the characters. However, the direction was so focused on the tennis itself and on other unessential things, that I, not being a tennis fan, had to finish it in 2 viewings, because I got too bored the first time.

And to add to all of that, Zendaya's older version of the character is arrogant, unnecessarily hostile, and disloyal. Why? Because of Hollywood's current politics. Do women in Hollywood not get tired of playing the same character over and over again since 2016? Kate Winslet in Mare of Easttown. Jodie Foster in true detective season 4, and her female partner who is a fighter in real life. Resurrected Gamora who knees Peter Quill in the groin for even trying to touch her. Agatha Harkness in that whatever show. Velma. Goddamn it, there's even a show called Girlboss now.

    TLDR: Just don't watch this.
