If you know and love the British original, this is so, so disappointing. I wanted to like it; I'm something of a Mayim Bialik fan. So I gave it a good shot up through episode four, then gave up.
Miranda Hart built her hit show around a character she'd workshopped to perfection onstage - and it shows. She lives in the body of that character. She never looks like she's trying. Bialik is - and oh, my god, she is trying so, so hard. It's an inorganic performance outside her skill set. That's no slam on her! Almost no actor can play any role at all. This isn't hers.
Of the rest of the cast, only Leslie Jordan stands out, and he's not enough to carry it. The others wrestle with the predictable scripts, and blend right into the wallpaper.
It's too bad. Jim Parsons and Miranda Hart producing, Hart on the scripts, and it still didn't work. I'm genuinely disappointed, and I feel bad for the team that gave it their all. Oh well.
