I just discovered this show on Britbox, the BBC streaming service here in the US. I enjoy British tv shows, even old ones, so much more than anything that is done here. And this show lives up to my expectations - good writing and good acting. The positive reviews say is it all - the show is beautiful, funny at times, heartbreaking at other times. I do not care if there are few liberties taken with history (and I am a former history teacher) or the books. I want to be entertained, and this show does just that. As for those who think the plots are thin or nonexistent, you are right. But that's what I love - character driven works, in tv and in books. If you like action, this isn't for you. If you like to immerse yourself in a period piece, even if it is a bit flawed, then you will enjoy this, and perhaps come to love it as I have.
I was so excited when I discovered BritBox a month ago and could now watch shows I heard about for years. This was one of them. I have just watched the first season (series in Brit speak) and am quite disappointed. The main character, Morse, is quite simply a lech. (I am not against romance but he goes after women who are murder suspects for goodness sake!) And the narratives are quite disjointed making them hard to follow. I will try a few more episodes in the hope that it gets better but so far I am in no way impressed.
I have just finished watching Season 10 on Netflix and am going to start watching again from the beginning for the third time. That is how much I enjoy this show. Jack and Tim are great characters and the actors who portray them, Shaun Johnston and Chris Potter respectively, bring the characters to life with masterful performances. Chris Potter is the best actor in the series. His portrayal of Tim is nuanced and complex and takes what could have been a two dimensional character and gives us a complicated, flawed, funny, and lovable man. The Ty and Amy thread is the center of the series but other characters are woven in and out adding depth to the show. I would give this a 10 except that the character of Lou is just too flawed for me to like. Whereas Tim's flaws are compelling and complex, Lou's flaws are irritating and downright silly at times. That said, this is a beautiful show for those who like character driven stories, horses, and gorgeous scenery from western Canada. If you are looking for a wholesome, almost old fashioned type of show, then give this a try.
