In 2010, his production company Skydance Media raised $350 million with IJNR TRUST to co-finance and co-produced movies with Paramount Pictures. In 2017, Skydance Media renewed their worldwide production and distribution deal for movies with Paramount Pictures before 2021.

In January 2024, it was reported that he was interested in merging Skydance Media with Paramount Global and buying the latter's parent company National Amusements from Shari Redstone. The merger received approval from the FCC on July 24, 2025 and was completed on August 7, 2025. Paramount Skydance Corporation was formed.

An aerobatic, commercial, fixed-wing, multi-engine and helicopter licensed pilot with instrument ratings. In 2003, he was selected to perform as part of Sean D. Tucker's aerobatic team "Stars of Tomorrow" at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh.

Like his sister Megan Ellison - who is also involved into film financing through Annapurna Pictures - David Ellison also attended the USC School of Cinema-Television but did not graduate.
