It's been reported that the writers and producers of Away have a three-season plan for the series.

Filming began in Vancouver on August 26, 2019 and ended in February 2020.

Three days after it premiered on Netflix, the show ranked #1 in the streaming service's Top 10 shows in the U.S.

Hulu premiered the series The First (2018), which had a very similar plot to Away, two years before Away premiered. It dealt with members of a team of astronauts as they prepared to become the first humans to visit Mars and their relationships with their families. It featured eight episodes showing the team training and preparing, but, unlike Away, which showed its astronauts launching toward Mars in the first episode, The First took place on Earth the entire season leading up to their launch in the last episode. Hulu then cancelled the series.

The media site What's On Netflix reported on Sept. 9, 2020 that they've heard rumors Away may have been approved for a second season, but it hadn't been confirmed by Netflix.
