Anything for Love

Just One of the Girls surprised me in a few ways. It follows a high school student who decides to disguise himself as a girl when he transfers schools in order to avoid a gang of bullies. It's a goofy but perfectly respectable premise, that maybe isn't quite fully realised.

I must say, for a film from 1993 focused on a boy dressing up as a girl, it was surprisingly non-offensive. There were some icky pervy scenes to it which did date it, but actually the drag element wasn't the butt of all the jokes which was refreshing. In fact, a lot of the characters kind of rolled with it which was a surprising but welcome element of the script. As well as being non-offensive, the story was actually half decent. It had lots of the classic high school coming of age movie elements and tropes. None of them were particularly well done, but they weren't bad either. My main concern was that I just didn't care too much about any of the characters. I needed something to make me invest in it a bit more.

In terms of the humour, I thought this film could have been a lot funnier. There were actually a few clever jokes in what could have been a lowest common denominator script, but on the whole it was just average.

Weirdly I actually really liked the performances. The central performance of Corey Haim was really fun and he seemed to be having a good time with the role. I also thought Cameron Bancroft as the bully was quite entertaining.

Overall then, this film is perfectly watchable. The premise is decent, even if the end of the film is wildly predictable from the outset. It has some fun ideas, average comedy, and a couple of entertaining performances. Worth a watch if you like high school movies and drag!

Alanis Morrisette (pre-makeover) as the teeny-bopper singing 2 minutes before the credits roll - what else is there to watch in this movie? Alanis' mere pre-introspective presence is worth the rental!

I'll be the first to openly admit that the only reason I watch this ridiculous film is because of the fact that ALANiS is in it. This movie features a few of her awesome most incredible Canadian dance tracks("Too Hot", "Feel Your Love"[Album Version and Muzzle Mix],and "An Emotion Away") from 1991 and 1992. A clip of those songs here and there are the only things that save the segments of the movie that don't feature ALANiS. Viewers get to see her gorgeous self here and there...you might want to fast forward the movie to all scenes featuring her. Those scenes are too short if you ask me. Being a fan since 1985 (When she appeared on 8 episodes of Canada's "You Can't Do That On Television") I feel that ALANiS can do no wrong in the work she does. Her performance alone in this movie is what makes it worth watching. A film that has a plot revolved around a guy dressing up as a female to avoid a school bully is just crazy. Why not face the bully in the first place to avoid future embarrassment? In all actuality, no one would honestly fall for the disguise anyway. And anyone who actually attended high school will laugh when they see the ending. But nonetheless, I enjoy this movie every time I watch it(providing I use the fast-forward button). ALANiS saves this movie from being an embarrassing failure. (ALANiS plays the game with determination, she doesn't give a damn 'bout her reputation baby.)~1992 Rock On ALANiS!!!

• Not that that's really saying much, but this movie was actually quite decent. Amazingly watchable, all things considered.

Okay, here's what you get from this movie: A young Corey Haim (of "The Lost Boys"-fame), going undercover as a girl, to avoid getting beaten up by the school bully, Kurt (Cameron Bancroft of TV-fame only).

Originally, his plan is to just disguise as a girl to get past the bullies at the entrance, but once he's inside the school, a bunch of teachers comes over to him and asks him why he's not in class - and since it's his first day at school, he's forced to introduce himself as being a girl - thus ensuring that he's gonna have to wear a dress all year long. But things don't go as smoothly as planned, because suddenly he falls in love with this girl, Marie (played by the gorgeous Nicole Eggert), but he can only become her best friend, since he cannot reveal to her that he's a guy! Furthermore, his parents are unaware of his problems, so he constantly has to hide things from them, so they wont find out about it, which makes for a few funny scenes.

Anyway, apart from a tiny cameo by Alanis Morrissette, there's not much to look for in the supporting cast - unless you're a fan of Lochlyn Munro (from "Scary Movie") perhaps, who plays Marie's annoying ex-boyfriend who wants to push her into having sex with him before she feels ready. The director, Michael Keusch is mostly known for his straight-to-video Steven Seagal actioners (Attack Force, Flight of Fury, Shadowman), and some unknown German stuff, so this movie really stands out on his resumé as being something completely different.

Overall, this movie (called "Just One Of The Girls", rather than that other lame title) had a somewhat clichéd premise, but pulled it off quite nicely with a decent and likable performance by Haim and Eggert, coupled with a hilarious performance by Bancroft, as the love-stricken bad guy, who tries to get in touch with his softer side, in order to impress the woman of his dreams - who coincidentally looks like a guy.

I watched this movie like 5 times and i loved it each time. But the last time I wached , I saw something I didn't think I would see. It was in the last 5 minutes of the movie. I saw Alanis Morissette singing. She was acting as a singer and she was singing some cheesy dance song. I guess if you watch more carefully you'll see wonders.
