Nightmare Theater is a real kick. Of course they show awful movies, but their spots in between the movie are hilarious. Sometimes, and I mean in a blue moon sometimes, their movies aren't too bad. The Baron Mondo Von Doren is a demon who's been basically damned to show bad movies. El Sapo his zany, empty headed man servant. Mittens the Werewolf. You'll just have to watch it to understand Mittens. Then there's the curator. He shows movie items from the Merrill Movie museum. Cool stuff from all kinds of movies. I'm a little biased because they do film at my local PBS station. Take a couple hours and watch a few. You'll get hooked like I am.
If you are into hosted horror shows, this could be the one for you. A satisfying recipe of horror and comedy loaded with plenty of cheese. Each episode begins with the Baron requesting a film, and each episode El Sapo and Mittens fail terribly, choosing movies no sane person would choose to watch. The jokes and references are well-thought out, with extra care given to execution. Looking very forward to season three!
Since my previous, more extensive review was mysteriously deleted, I wanted to try again to warn potential viewers how truly awful this show is. The fact that it is shown late, late night on public service channels should be some sort of giveaway. Hosted horror movies, even bad movies, can be fun and entertaining. Not so with this amateurish offering that is just dreadful all the way around, and not fun at all. It has none the wit of something like "MST 3000" nor the camp of something like "Svengoolie. The premise is that a "minor demon", the Baron Mondo Van Doren (son of Mamie? He certainly looks as if he could be busty enough), has been sent by his "master" to earth to torment others with bad movies. For some reason, when talking to Satan, this large, effete man talks upward to the sky, as if addressing God instead of his "master", Satan, who, one might think, should be down below. That's just in the credits, and it goes downhill from there. It's often difficult to tell if he is reading cue cards or just looking at the wrong camera. Then there are his "sidekicks": El Sapo de Tempesto - a schlub wearing large, Larry King-style glasses under a Lucha Libre-type mask, whom the Baron treats with nothing but disdain and contempt; and then there is Mittens, a silent character who appears in a mask that has to be seen to be believed - but isn't worth the view. The actor actually appeared once out of his Mittens drag, wherein one wishes he were still silent. He out effetes the Baron in a queeny, drop-dead, supercilious tone of voice that quickly grows from annoying to irritating so quickly that one wishes Mittens could be put down. The cast seems to be a group of old friends from the disco, who, if they have any intelligence at all, are disdainfully putting us all on by proving that any kind of trash can make it to the airwaves. One of the most unintentionally funny segments is the visit to the curator, the strange obese guy with the child molester haircut they keep in the sub...sub...sub....sub...basement. (The Baron pretends to have to slowly count the number of "subs he slowly recites each episode in introducing the segment.) Each show he offers up some obscure prop from some usually obscure horror or sci-fi flick. The few others who have given this dreck its high ratings and glowing reviews HAVE to be friends and relatives of the participants (and maybe even the participants themselves. Note that NONE of them have reviewed anything else on IMDB.)
I first saw this program was several weekends ago on a Public Broadcast Station WNYEDT/WNYE-DT NYC Life Fios-525. I know this same station showed old movies relating to NYC on Fri. Nights. Now I've been watching horror movie shows since 2019 with Svengoolie on the MeTV channel on Sat. Nights. I soon discovered other shows: Drive -In Movie Maniacs, Off-Beat Cinema, Horror Hotel & Harvey's Festival of Fear, all during the weekends. I was kind of shocked at first that a public broadcast station was presenting this show but not surprised being with the popularity of Svengoolie. The Movies! Channel has been doing a Friday Night Frights programing since early 2022 (but there's no host for that), so PBS getting into the game does kind of makes sense.
The 3 host for this show a so low-key as to be boring; they lack the showy pizzazz of Svengoolie & their skits are not as well tuned as with the gang on Halloween Harvey's Harvey's Festival of Fear; & they don't have the Laid-Back charm of the host for Off-Beat Cinema. The main thing for me is the lack of commercial breaks & watching the silly but kind of fun old cliff-hanger movie serials played before the main feature. I would recommend this show to see memorable B-classics like Little Shop of Horrors or truly-should-be-forgotten dreck like Track of the Moon Beast and all else in between.
The first show I saw presented Warning From Space a '50's Japanese Sci-Fi 'epic' that I always seemed to miss when I kid. So I was happy to finally see the movie with no commercials, but with some Info. & comedy-bit breaks.

The cast is very hot and talented. However, you must be funny to watch or it will over your head. Sorry I do not make the rules. That's the review now watch the show.
