The Architecture the Railways Built

I found this purely by accident and loved it, Tim dunn is clearly really into his railways and there's nothing like an enthusiast to bring something alive, a lot of new facts and subjects I wasn't aware I didn't know which is always nice, in these too often miserable times this was a programme that seduced me away from my safe world of black and white old films , topstuff!.

As someone with a passionate interest in architecture and history I was always likely to enjoy this series but this was one of those rare series where just about everything was perfect. Vital for any documentary programme is a presenter with a real passion and knowledge for the subject and not just promoting their own ego.

Tim Dunn was outstanding, his enthusiasm was so infectious, every programme was interesting, a good mix and balance in each programme with some of the best European stories to add to the mainly UK stories - after all, the UK is where the railways started. Highly recommended as one of the best documentary series I've seen in some time.

This a surprisingly good series on how the Victorians embraced the trains and built some wonderful stations that are still standing and fully functional. Some are not but the recent story of Saint Pancras station and how it was saved from demolition was a real joy to watch.

The show benefits greatly from Tim Dunn enthusiastic style of presentation and no off-site talking heads just people being interviewed by Tim that add value and to give him access to the old buildings.

It shouldn't be as good as it is, but with Tim Dunn presenting a range of interesting and varied railway-related stories with infectious enthusiasm you're constantly uncovering the unexpected and unusual. You don't have to like railways to be sucked in. Terrific stuff.

Love this show it's utterly fascinating and Tim gets spoiled again going to places I would love to as well and speaking to experts who know what they are talking about for a change. Very well researched and love the segments on European railways some of those stations are masterful works of art not just practical places. The Helsinki Station wow it's beautiful. I've been lucky and visited many European countries via rail using an interrail pass in 1990 and again in 2000. A lot changed in this 10 years with former Eastern Block countries opening up more easily. Such a glorious way to see Europe and it's amazing railway architecture. Top marks from me.
