Wow - the story of One Day was finally adapted in a way that truly captured the spirit of the book, and in some ways excelled it. I read One Day after graduating many years ago, I was really touched by the story. The film was ok but didn't do the story justice for me. Who knew what I really wanted (and needed) was this limited series format.
This was beautifully done. It captured the spirit of love, life, heartbreak, the enuui and challenges of life. I watched this over 3 days, though if I didn't work full time - I would have binged it in one day. That being said - I think it's best to watch it in parts, because this show captures the different chapters of life and how they intertwine to make one's person's life so beautiful. I could imagine it would be even more intense if I watched it in one day.
Watching One Day reminded me that life can be heartbreaking, lovely, exciting, thrilling, scary, but most importantly wonderful and adventurous, especially if you are willing to take a risk when it comes to love. In the way Dexter and Emma finally meet on the penultimate day at the end of university, just before their graduation, and have a significant impact on each other's life indefinitely- loving each other throughout the years as friends, both near and from afar, weaving through the different chapters of life and growing up and trying to figure out life and the purpose of it.... As well as finding one's function (in layman's term: work that suits you), I think we all know that love is the most important thing that gives our lives meaning - and that love comes in so many forms - whether it's familial, romantic, friendship.
There are so many moments that touched me when watching this show. I have been on an emotional rollercoaster and have the empty boxes of tissue as proof! The acting from the main leads who portrayed Emma and Dexter was superb, and the supporting cast were fantastic too - a special shout out to the actors who played Dexter's mum and dad, Tilly, Ian, and Sylvie. Truly, the whole cast was superb and the show captured significant moments of life through the lens of one day - because really, everything in all of our lives happens in one day, as all we ever have is today, some days can be monotonous and some can be significant in a positive or negative way.
The show will take you on an existential journey - it's definitely taken me on one. I will also be fishing out my book to read (or purchasing it again if I have lost my copy). Thank you for this gem of a show...I will definitely rewatch again, but only when I am ready to get back on the emotional rollercoaster.

One reviewer said maybe they are the only one who hasn't read the book or seen the film, you are not alone! I'd never heard of it before. I found it compelling, it brought back so much for me from my own past, it was very nostalgic. People have commented on a lack of chemistry, I didn't see it that way at all. I loved Emma's refusal to just pander to Dexter, and I like her humour, I thought they worked really well together. They had more than just ripping each other's clothes off, which is why their relationship endured.
I cried, multiple times. I loved this series. If you were born in the seventies or eighties you'll relate to a lot of things.
After watching I had a brief look at the original film and I definitely prefer the series. I know it's set in the past but the film looks so dated.

One of the best things I've seen in a while , Binged it over the weekend, brilliantly acted , their magnetic chemistry pulls you in and makes you feel as though you were right there with them. And with a soundtrack so sublime , it had me laughing, weeping and smiling, with a perfect level of nostalgia and incredible acting that makes you binge in the entire show in one sitting. Love how they portray friendship and love and the end is absolutely as heart-breaking as in the film and book. One of those shows that will stay with you for a while after it's finished. Just brilliant.
If you like depth, if you like love, just watch it.

When I saw this title on Netflix I thought "One Day" sounded familiar. It reminded me of this Anne Hathaway film I've never watched but I've seen in passing a million times over the past 10+ years. Lo and behold, the two are based on the same novel.
Coming into it blind, I was not expecting to be as blown away as I was. Seriously, I ended up binge watching the entire series in one sitting yesterday. I can't sing enough praises about it. The story is beautiful and touching. Ambika Mod and Leo Woodall were spectacular, especially Leo Woodall. After making me shed tears I didn't know existed and (parasocially) fall in love with Dex myself, I am such a fan of Leo and his acting now. I felt just about every emotion possible, in the best way possible.
It's made clear early on that when Emma and Dex meet they come from very, very different worlds. Personally, I think casting Ambika Mod was a brilliant move; not only was her acting amazing, but also I think casting a POC as Emma added a whole other layer to the differences between the two and the beauty of their love story that I wouldn't think achievable in the 2011 movie version with Anne Hathaway playing Emma (I should also add I've never read the novel. So, I'm uncertain if Emma was presented as a POC in the book, but if she wasn't, I truly can't imagine it being meant to be any other way). Mod and Woodall have chemistry that is off the Richter scale, and if you're reading this, yes, you should go watch it right now if you have not already!

I'm new to the story so not coming in with any pre conceived ideas on how I think the characters should be cast in my minds eye. I loved the nostalgia and the soundtrack is great, it could be my Amazon music playlist, it's a beautiful story thats wonderfully acted. The chemistry between the two main actors is sublime. I think there would be a miscarriage of justice if there isn't plenty of nominations come awards season. Leo Woodall does a great job with a character that could be very unlikable in other hands and what can I say about Ambika Mod's portrayal as Emma? Just perfection, I think one of the best and most engaging performances I've seen in a while. Also I should add a tremendous cast outside the main two characters, I was so invested I needed to know what happened to the likes of ian. Can't praise this show enough, a must watch.
